Biography

Brown started crossing boundaries -- both musical and geographical -- at a very young age. He was born in 1924 in Vinton, Louisiana and raised in Orange, Texas. He learned guitar and fiddle from his father, a strong multi-instrumentalist who taught his son to play Texas fiddle music, traditional French tunes and even polkas. Gate began his professional career at the age of 21 as a drummer in San… Read more in Amazon's Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

While not as incisive or witty as some of Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's other recordings, No Looking Back contains the work of a mature artist, from the introspective lyrics of "Better Off with the Blues" and "My Own Prison" to the swinging fiddle on "Stop Time." Still, there's not quite enough of what makes Brown what he is; that is, one of the finest genre-bending players of our time. On the other hand, the material's solid, and the jazz jams of "Digging New Ground" and "C-Jam Blues" show that Brown's as at home in the jazz realm as in the blues. The only real misstep here is the pop duet "I Will Be Your Friend" with Michelle Shocked, which can only be described as odd. --Genevieve Williams

From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD

Far from Brown's own standards, this overproduced effort has flashes of the old "Gate," but too much is buried under heavy horn choruses. Brown's fame is based on his distinctive vocals and incisive guitar playing; neither is heard enough here. (J.T.) -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

The late great Stevie Ray Vaughan had many jazz hints in his output, however,Clarence'Gatemouth'Brown takes all that to an extreme-a good one-delivering a powerful and authoritative fusion album, bound to please not only those stepped in the Texas blues tradition, but also those more inclined toward jazz and funk. His 1992 album is simply a must!

3.0 out of 5 stars He done better, August 16, 2002
This review is from: No Looking Back (Audio CD)
So, there are some real gems on this one: "Better Off With The Blues", "Alligator-Eatin Dog", and "My Own Prison". But there just isn't the lyrical and musical kick that Gatemouth has produced in other albulms. The duet is odd. There's plenty of different styles here, if you're new to Gate, but you might be a little more satsfied with "American Music, Texas Style".

I have always loved Clarence Gatemouth Browns take on music. I actually met him at a few shows he played in Seattle. Autographs only of course, I didn't want to bother the man. I was sad to hear of his passing but certainly a life well spent, entertaining many people with a swing beat.
