"We're a country band that's trying to combine what we love best about old Nashville country music (sassy humor, boot-stomping two-step grooves and rich harmonies), square dance music (the original rural country music) and Western Swing (the ultimate country dance music) with our own modern sensibilities," explains songwriter and vocalist Emily Miller.
That dichotomy of vintage/modern extends to the recording studio where Patsy Cline's Seven Lonely Nights served as inspiration. The Sweetback Sisters - Zara Bode (vocals), Emily Miller (vocals), Jesse Milnes (guitar, fiddle), Stefan Amidon (drums), and Ross Bellenoit (Telecaster, vocals), and Peter Bitenc (bass) - were "rolling..." to tape and singing their "gorgeous girl-on-girl harmonies" (- NBC New York) into an old RCA 44 ribbon mic.
"We were trying to capture some of the dynamism that we have developed over the last 5 years of performing on stage together, so we recorded most of the vocals with Zara and myself crowded around one microphone and balanced the levels by changing our respective distances from the mic," says Emily.
On Looking For A Fight, their seven originals are seamlessly intertwined along reinvented classics from genre legends Patsy Cline ("Love Me, Honey, Do"), and The Sons of the Pioneers ("Cowboy Ham & Eggs"), new renditions of more contemporary artists Dwight Yoakem ("It Won't Hurt When I Fall") and The Travelling Wilbury's ("Rattled") and unearthed songwriting treasures from Laurie Lewis ("Texas Bluebonnets") and Hazel Dickens ("Don't Put Her Down").

This album hits ALL the right spots in body and soul!I can't wait to see them live--I think that they're coming out to the northwest part of the Left Coast in February. Bless this band for reaffirming that good music is still being made!!!!!

I second that five star review!,

Previous album(s)by SS are a little spotty but this one is "spot on" - great old timey gal harmonies mixed with contemporary lyrics, arrangements and tempos. Yes, and due credit to the album producers for the recordings and choices of songs. The cover of Dwight Yoakam's "It Won't Hurt When I Fall Off This Barstool" is outstanding.

Twangs in all the right places,
This review is from: Looking For A Fight (MP3 Download)
"Looking for a Fight" is the Sweetback Sisters' finest work yet. The group has managed to capture a classic country sound, but make it sound fresh, modern, lively, and, dare I say, tasteful? Harmonies are spot-on, instrumentals smokin', and twangs in all the right places. What's also unusual is the quality of all the songs on the album. How many times do you buy a CD site unseen, only to find that half the tracks are clunkers? Not so here. Credit should also go to whoever did the arranging, audio recording, and production. Something about "Looking for a Fight" just *feels* right. So bust out your iPods, this one's a keeper!
