Book Description

October 10, 2000
In this concise, straightforward book, Steven Sadleir presents essential information on a remarkable array of religious and spiritual belief systems-from the ancient to the avant-garde. East or West, large or small, readers can find fascinating facts about the histories, beliefs, sacred texts, rituals and practices of the world's religions.

It includes groups that most people have heard of and are curious about, but would have difficulty obtaining objective information on. Discover the Eastern religions of Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, and much more. Visit the Western religions, and cross many spiritual paths with Druids and Pagans, as well as Christian Mythics. This guide also provides addresses and phone numbers, and suggests additional sources of information on each group.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

If you've ever had the feeling that you're looking for God in all the wrong places, here's a sourcebook that could help you narrow your search. Seeker and author Steven Sadleir spent 20 years accumulating all the information in this comprehensive guidebook to the world's spiritual teachings. His intentions were altruistic, hoping that seekers could start with wandering these pages rather than roaming the earth for 20 years in order to find their personal path to God. "The moment for self-discovery is at hand, for each page has something to offer you," he promises. "This very act of looking develops your soul's ability to see through your eyes and guide you in your search."

It's hard to imagine a more unbiased view of global spirituality. Religions such as Taoism, Sikhism, Judaism, and Christianity are presented alongside write-ups on channeling, the Baha'i Faith, Alcoholics Anonymous, and the teachings of Ram Das and ancient druids. Although books could be (and have been) written about each of these numerous traditions, Sadleir condenses them into brief chapters, with each one providing a write-up on the history, belief systems, rituals, and holidays. Every chapter also includes a list of recommended readings and Web sites. Sadleir designed this guidebook so that it can be read from cover to cover, gaining a complete overview of the world's spiritual teachings. Or it can be used as a source of practical mysticism where readers simply open to the passages and paths that they feel inexplicably drawn into. --Gail Hudson

This review is from: Looking for God: A Seeker's Guide to Religious and Spiritual Groups of the World (Paperback)
This is a refreshing, unbiased, objective source of information about all religions. In addition to his extensive factual research, Mr. Sadleir indicates that he attended and participated in activities of all these religions, and actually spent time with the leaders and and members of each congregation so that he could write about them accurately. This is what I like most about this book; it contains no hearsay nor innuendo. Look through the pages and find what suits you best. As the founder of the Self Awareness Institute in California, Mr Sadleir has done a lot of work so readers can exercise their right of choice and experience the joy of spiritual freedom. Concise brief chapters share the history, belief systems, practices, location, leaders, addresses, phone numbers, and web sites of each religion. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, July 13, 2001
By
Diana Ashcroft (South Portland, ME United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Looking for God: A Seeker's Guide to Religious and Spiritual Groups of the World (Paperback)
I first purchased this book 10 years ago under the title, " The Spiritual Seeker's Guide". Once I found what I was searching for, I sold the book at a yard sale. Since then I have purchased two more copies for a friend and a family member, because I told them how informative this was in giving basic beliefs and histories to the many different religions. Now I am buying a third copy to keep for myself, in case I should ever want to lend it out. I had difficultly tracking this down.. the author has since updated the material, and changed the title of the book. This is great for plain & simple basics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive, Honest, Truthful!, March 18, 2010
This book is perfect for the spiritual seeker. It gives you a good overview of all the religions and perhaps insight
as to why we are where we are in the world today. I have read Mr. Sadleirs bio, which is quite impressive, and feel this is a must read for everyone with an open mind. I would definitely recommend this to everyone. Self-realization: An Owner-User Manual for Human Beings
