Book Description

December 28, 1999
In this book Dr. Amy Newburger, a nationally recognized dermatologist, explains everything any woman needs to know to keep herself looking fabulous at any age.

The skin is not only the body's largest organ, it is also a living, self-regenerating, head-to-toe "coat" that is unlike any other piece of clothing you will ever put on. To be sure that this marvelous skin-suit remains fresh and vibrant throughout your life, you must first know what you can expect to look like at every stage; what to accept as the immutable result of your genetic makeup, life choices, and chronological age; and what you have the power to change.

In Looking Good at Any Age, Dr. Newburger not only explains what women can expect to see when they look in the mirror at every age, she also provides them with the tools to be certain that their reflection is as youthful, vibrant, and glowing with health as possible.

From describing the basic skin care every woman should practice starting in her twenties, to identifying the best over-the-counter and prescription cleansers, cosmetics, and anti-aging products in "Dr. Amy's Top Fifty Anti-Aging Products That Really Work," to shedding light on various procedures--as minor as a collagen injection or as major as a face-lift--she answers every question any woman could ever ask about how her skin is nourished, how and why it changes throughout her life, and how to "turn back the clock" to the best of her ability.

And, as a special bonus, she includes tips from two top makeup artists on specific products, how to master the "art of camouflage," and makeup "don'ts" to avoid.

Looking Good at Any Age offers a complete package to any woman concerned not only with looking her best but also with maintaining a healthy complexion throughout her life.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Addressing a fear common among some women, dermatologist Newburger leaves no stone unturned in her comprehensive guide to understanding women's skin. Describing the body's largest organ as a dynamic, self-renewing "suit" and a "visual messenger" of both physical and emotional health, Newburger outlines the difference between intrinsic (genetic) and extrinsic (controllable factors such as stress, nutrition, sun and smoke) aging and how both affect what women can realistically expect their skin to look like, decade by decade. Whether targeting the first fine lines and blemishes of the 30s or dry skin and droopy eyelids of the 40s and 50s, Newburger offers useful cosmetic, dermatological and even surgical solutions. Drawing on 25 years of medical experience and anecdotal stories of patients from her private New York practice, Newburger warns of the unrealistic quest for physical perfection that plagues some women (often to compensate for losses in other areas) and contends there is no "magic bullet." Review

Advance praise for Looking Good at Any Age:

"Dr. Amy Newburger has written a terrific book. It's for women by a woman, but men may also profit by reading it. In easily understood language, she explains not only the what and the how of skin, but goes far beyond, providing a context in which to think about and to deal with one's reaction to their skin. Superb vignettes or case reports illustrate her points in highly personal terms. Most important, she explains what can reasonably be expected, prevented, and corrected. This is a 'must-read' for anyone who has an interest in their appearance and health."
--William H. Eaglstein, M.D., Chairman, Department of Dermatology & Cutaneous Surgery, University of Miami School of Medicine

"Scientifically sound and psychologically exciting, Looking Good at Any Age is accessible and informative to all women interested in preserving a healthy and youthful appearance."
--Dr. Lynn Drake, Chairman, Department of Dermatology, University of Oklahoma health sciences center

Just read an excellent book "Looking Good at Any Age" by Dr. Newburger..it really debunks the hype around the so called miracle beauty products and tells the truth about what skin and beauty products can really achieve against aging. It's easy to read in a case history format and helpful both to teenagers and seniors, a must read for aging baby boomers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended to My Patients, March 6, 2000

This review is from: Looking Good at Any Age : A Woman Dermatologist Talks to Women About What to Expect, What to Accept, What Can Be Changed (Hardcover)
It was a pleasure to find a book about looking good that was not only an easy, enjoyable read, but which was full of scientifically accurate information about the skin and skin products. Dr Newburger's compassionate approach to her patients is reflected in the lively case histories. The book's emphasis on what changes are normal with ageing, and how to look your best regardless of your age, is practical and down to earth. With the market flooded with miracle products for ageing baby boomers, it is a pleasure to have an accurate guide to what really works and why. As a physician, I have frequently found myself recommending this book to my patients.

5.0 out of 5 stars Credible, readable, January 7, 2000

This book is a very credible and readable book. Dr. Newburger does not talk down nor preach (except perhaps to use sun screen!). I would highly recommend it.

She has provided a book that is useful for women of many ages who want their skin to look its best. This doesn't mean one has to have cosmetic surgery or collagen (although these options are discussed in a very interesting way); rather Dr. Newburger talks about what spcecific beauty products work (naming names), what consumers should look for on lables, etc.

One also gets information about the psychological -- when is caring TOO much about your looks unhealthy. And the book has vey useful information regarding real skin problems of a medical nature.

I for one am passing on the collagen, but I got my cucumber pads for my eyes.
