5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing amount of information in this book!
Nancy Nix-Rice introduces the concept of "clothes capsules" in her book "Looking Good." These are sets of your existing clothes (or helped out with items you might want to purchase.) These are tops that go with slacks, skirts, the accessories. You put them together in your closet and never have to say "I don't have anything to wear." You also...

3.0 out of 5 stars It's ok
This book disappointed me in many ways. First, the drawings are very outdated, and I can't see anybody, let alone myself, wearing any of the outfits depicted. Second, the four categories of style are very restricting. On top of that, they aren't defined well enough. Finally, the book seems to be written for an 1980s businesswoman, not a modern anywoman. It was fun to...

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing amount of information in this book!, April 9, 2001
This review is from: Looking Good: Wardrobe Planning and Personal Style Development (Paperback)
Nancy Nix-Rice introduces the concept of "clothes capsules" in her book "Looking Good." These are sets of your existing clothes (or helped out with items you might want to purchase.) These are tops that go with slacks, skirts, the accessories. You put them together in your closet and never have to say "I don't have anything to wear." You also can learn to purchase items (even those tempting bargains) that fit with the capsules.

But that isn't all that is in here. There is scarf-tying help, accessory advice, color advice for your complexion, make-up advice including a face chart, sewing information, mending, clothes and fabric care, renovation and remodeling out-of-style clothes, and how to pick the proper clothes to flatter any figure. And I mean ANY. She has photos that are astonishing, showing how even someone with a very full figure can instantly improve the very same outfit by using a buckle, the right color stockings and the right hem length.

Just about anything you'd need to know about keeping your wardrobe up to date and flattering to you is in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Looking Good" does a lot more than help you look good!, February 26, 2000

This book has helped me make many positive changes. In fact, although I have owned it for many years, I have it out once again to review and get things back in order or in other words, "brush up" on my image. For anyone in or entering into the corporate world...it is an absolute MUST READ! Covering such topics of how you look, making do with very little, and excellent tips for business and pleasure traveling, it is a "how to" manual of sorts. Beginning with the basic clothing and storage space that you already own..sorting and editing, building onto your wardrobe with inexpensive accessories, packing for travel, updating closets and storage areas, selecting the most versatile styles, and ending with great tips on how to care for all. For travel it is amazing how few items can become so many combinations. The information on organizing is a definite read for women and men. If you haven't had the opportunity to read this fabulous "manual", treat yourself now! You may want to go ahead and order several because you WILL want to share it with friends!

5.0 out of 5 stars A resource book for every woman, March 19, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Looking Good: Wardrobe Planning and Personal Style Development (Paperback)
I'm Looking Good! After years of hiding behind long, baggy coats wondering if it was safe to come out lest my slacks make me look too broad-in-the-beam or my belt confirm everyone's suspicion that I have no real waist line; Nancy Nix-Rice has written a truly useable criteria for figure assessment and clothing selection. I drew 14 dots on a large piece of paper, connected them, folded the paper 8 times and voila! I'm not short-wasted or slope-shouldered after all. I am pear-shaped and heavy--not a problem. Looking Good is a guide for those masses of real women who have always hoped they could be beautiful, if only they knew the rules. Looking Good enables the reader to dress beautifully from color choice and figure-flattering styles, to fabric selection and care. From storing your wardrobe in a closet, to packing it all up for a trip overseas, every woman can benefit by these easy-to-understand rules of style. Cathy Tripod

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful tips on dressing but has out-dated examples, April 18, 2001
This review is from: Looking Good: Wardrobe Planning and Personal Style Development (Paperback)
I will give this book the thumbs up for the good content, the good tips on dressing and choosing the right kind of clothes based on both your personal style and your colour group. My only 2 dissatisfactions are: 1. Limiting dress styles to only the 4 groups are not realistic, I cannot find myself fitting into any of them. 2. The pictures are out-dated, with dress styles showing out-of-date clothes and accessories. I think this book should be given a new look (which is what it is supposed to help women to achieve!) of up-to-date examples of just what they are trying to show.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you want to look your best, read this book!, June 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Looking Good: Wardrobe Planning and Personal Style Development (Paperback)
This book has great ideas for building closet capsules. There are illustrated capsules for business, casual, evening, creative, high fashion dramatic, and feminine romatic. A personal style quiz will help you to determine your best style. ( i.e. Tailored Classic, Sporty Natural, Feminine etc...) This quiz is followed by definitions and examples of the styles. In addition the book covers accessories, makeup, shopping, clothing care, packing for a trip, closet control and much more. Everytime I read this book I discover something new. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to look their best.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Reference, August 2, 2005
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Looking Good: Wardrobe Planning and Personal Style Development (Paperback)
This book is a strong reference piece with useful illustrations. I agree with other reviewers that the styles and color palettes could benefit from an update. The advice offered is sound, however, and regardless of outdated fashion lines in the examples they clearly convey the concept being illustrated.

In addition to the illustrations the reader is asked to evaluater her wardrobe using charts and graphs. Questionaires about preference are included as well as a measurement worksheet to help the reader sort out the information being presented. It may sound like a lot of information but it is an easy, managable approach

The manner in which these ideas are illustrated is the real strength of this piece-if the reader is very visual this is the book to have. The graphs, charts, and questionaires in the book also offer the reader options for reflection.

Frankly there are several other books available which offer very similar information, but I would still recommend having this one on hand as a reference.

I have major closet organization problems. This book has a great section on CLOSET CONTROL. What a great name for a great section.

This book also has great sections on the "Closet Capsule," Accessories, and "Shopping Smart." There is also a great section on what to know before you shop.

4.0 out of 5 stars Make Over Your Closet!, March 12, 2003
By
This review is from: Looking Good: Wardrobe Planning and Personal Style Development (Paperback)
Looking Good presents clear advice, lots of illustrations, good ideas. It is occasionally contradictory, and not always practical. This book offers advice that is deceptively simple. With it, you could make-over your entire wardrobe and never complain you have nothing to wear again.

This is a thorough and sensible, if time-consuming, approach to making over your wardrobe so you will never be able to say "I have nothing to wear!" again. (Unless it's laundry day, anyway.) It's a very visual book, which is helpful when she's illustrating why one thing flatters and another does not. I like and recommend this book.

NOTE: This book has a huge Anglo bias. Nearly all of the illustrations and photos are Caucasian women. This doesn't mean that the fashion tips are flawed, but some readers may be put off by this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Looking Good: A Comprehensive Guide To Wardrobe Planning,, August 20, 2004
This review is from: Looking Good: Wardrobe Planning and Personal Style Development (Paperback)
There were several "Eureka!" moments, as I read Nancy's book, when I actually wanted to personally call the author and thank her for writing such a valuable resource. I'm an aspiring image consultant and am voraciously reading every image book I can get my hands on. This book does an incredible job of using visual illustrations to support concepts that--if only explained in paragraph form--would be utterly confusing. A great example? I've always avoided double-breasted blazers because they did not flatter my curvier, short-waisted figure. Nancy's visual showing a simple changing of the buttons showed me that I CAN wear such a garment--and it can actually flatter me. Yup . . . a Eureka moment, to be sure. I've been a college educator for fourteen years and know when potentially "complex" information is presented clearly. This book visually manages to do just that. I wish I had found this book sooner. Sign me--one grateful reader.
