Book Description

“The nuns use this as their measuring stick: who your people are. Well, what if you don’t have no people? Or any you know of? What then? Are you doomed?”

This is the nagging question of fifteen-year-old Nell’s life. Born with a cleft palate and left a foundling on the doorstep of a convent, she yearns to know her mother, whose name, she knows, was Jane.

When the Mother Superior tries to pawn her off to a mean-looking farmer and his beaten-down wife, Nell opts for the only alternative she can see: she runs away.

A chance encounter with a dime novel exhorting the exploits of Calamity Jane, heroine of the west, gives Nell the purpose of her life: to find Calamity Jane, whom Nell is convinced is her mother.

Her quest takes her down rivers, up rivers and across the Badlands to Deadwood, South Dakota, and introduces her to Soot, a big, lovable black dog, and Jeremy Chatterfield, a handsome young Englishman who isn’t particular about how he makes his way, as long as he doesn’t have to work for it. Together they trek across the country meeting characters as wonderful and bizarre as the adventure they seek, learning about themselves and the world along the way.

You’ll take Nell with you to that special place in your memory where you keep the best characters. She’ll stick with you, beat you down, buoy you up, and teach you a thing or two about life. You’ll wonder at her stubborn determination, her patience and her courage, but you won’t forget her. Not for a long time.

About the Author

Judith Redline Coopey was born in Altoona, PA and holds degrees from the Pennsylvania State University and Arizona State University. A passion for history inherited from her father drives her writing. Her first book, Redfield Farm was the story of the Underground Railroad in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. The second, Waterproof, tells how the 1889 Johnstown Flood nearly destroyed a young woman’s life. Looking For Jane is a quest for love and family in the 1890s brought to life through the eyes of Nell, a young girl convinced that Calamity Jane is her mother. As a teacher, writer and student of history, Ms Coopey finds her inspiration in the rich history of her native state and in stories of the lives of those who have gone before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story January 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Here is the heartwarming story of a foundling girl with a cleft palate that was not wanted by her Mother and dropped off on the porch of a convent. Due to her physical appearance and speech impediment, she is subjected to ridicule by outsiders. She takes a row boat on the bank of the river and sets off on an adventure to find her Mother, who she thinks is Calamity Jane, in the Dakotas. The story reminds me of the adventures of Huckleberry Finn, except in this book, Nell is looking for her Mother, and a home, where she can be wanted and loved and have a family of her own. On the river trip she encounters many different people and travels with a young Englishman who helps her survive for food and necessities. Her adventures introduce her to greed, lust, love, and charity.

The ending for Nell is a welcomed surprise. Judy Coopey does an excellent job with the story. I have also read her two other books, "Watertight" and "Redfield Farm". I would recommend all three of them.

Thoroughly good read and a totally unexpected ending. A great adventure which brought back memories of my own trip to South Dakota. Once again Ms. Coopey's strong heroine kept me captivated to the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars CAN'T WAIT.... May 16, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Until I have read the whole book to tell you how much I am loving this story!!!
It makes me feel like I have gotten hold of an adult version of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn...the female counterpart.
I get just as anxious about Nell's escapades as I did back then. I always wanted to be just like them and this spunky girl would have fit right in.

I am almost to the end but I already know I will look for more books by this author
as reading this one has been fun, sad, funny, and so recommendable..
I will be disappointed when it is over...a sequel would be nice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming Story September 2, 2013
By dawn
Format:Kindle Edition
Fortunately I came across this book and decided to purchase it. Loved all the entertaining adventures, the ending was beautiful. Two loyal people on a quest to find something everyone needs which is family ties and love. Love can come in many forms, ties that bind are not always family. Fast moving, uplifting, a real gem!
