5.0 out of 5 stars What a movie ... what a soundtrack!, September 2, 2003

This is terrific in all respects. It's great to FINALLY see "Dont Ask to Stay..." on CD after all these years ... the only bummer? I am sad that "Could It Be Magic" is the closer here because it's the complete version in all of its' glory & it's so sad to hear it painfully fade away and have a close to the album (that's what I bought Donna's "A Love Trilogy" for).

This was quite the contreversial film back in 1977, but boy does every song here match the scene they're used in perfectly! The songs are fantastic and you will enjoy this ... give it a chance!

4.0 out of 5 stars Even NON-Disco Fans Will Dig This. Surprisingly Excellent!, August 29, 2002
This review is from: Looking for Mr Goodbar (Audio CD)
I was never a particular fan of disco music. I liked some of the songs...many of them were just awful & in our faces for too many hours of each day...BUT...the songs that were selected for this movie were superb. They pulled what was quite a cheap film into a different stratosphere.

Boz Scaggs' best songs, Donna Summers' best songs, Diana Ross's sexy: 'Love Hangover', whoever chose the music for this movie knew what he was doing. Shame the guys who made the retrospective '90s movies about the '70s disco scene, didn't take a leaf out of his book.

I especially liked the wonderful Bill Withers song, 'She's Lonely' & still love it to this day. It was originally just a 'B' side, but it was brought to its well deserved life by this film. I'd recommend this album to people for that track alone. Plus the FANTASTIC O'Jays, also their best song, 'Backstabbers.'

The excellent theme song by Marlena Shaw is melancholic & powerful.

A top notch collection!

Practically all the tunes are catchy. Also, each and every song is heard in the film. The songs match the films content. Sound quality could be better- don't think this was digitally remastered.

5.0 out of 5 stars jazzman, January 31, 2012

What a FABULOUS soundtrack this is! I was in college when this film came out
back in the 70's, and I remember that time well. This collection of tunes from
the movie PERFECTLY captures the mood, style, and vibe from 1977, when it
was released. That time is gone forever, and I dearly miss it. I saw "Looking
For Mr. Goodbar" when it first came out, and still have a mint condition vinyl
copy of the soundtrack. The songs by Donna Summer, Thelma Houston, Diana
Ross, Bill Withers, Boz Scaggs, The O'Jays, Commodores, and Marlena Shaw
provide a brilliant backdrop to the dark subject matter, nature, and ultimately,
sad and disturbing outcome of Diane Keaton's desperate, reckless character in
the film. The disco music in this film would NORMALLY be intended for fun and
relaxtion, but in "Mr. Goodbar", there is a dangerous, menacing tone to it that
matches the film's drama and suspense. I became a huge fan of jazz/soul singer
Marlena Shaw after hearing her haunting version of "Don't Ask To Stay Until To-
morrow", the theme from "Mr. Goodbar" - (check out her stellar 1975 jazz vocal
release, "Who Is This Bitch, Anyway?" on the Blue Note label, available on cd).
The film, itself, which features a BRILLIANT performance by Diane Keaton, and
written for the screen and directed by Richard Brooks, STILL hasn't been releas-
ed on dvd yet, as of this writing - have never understood this. It's a classic time-
piece from a long-gone era with a magnificent soundtrack to match. Hopefully, it
will be released on dvd soon (with special features, interviews, etc.). Diane won
the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1978 for "Annie Hall", made in the same
year as "Mr. Goodbar", but many (including myself) feel she should have received
it for her riveting role as the lonely, desperate "Theresa" in "Goodbar". Kudo's to
all involved in their inspired selection of music for the "Looking For Mr. Goodbar"
soundtrack - haunting, dark, and unforgettable, just like the film. Outstanding!
I've always loved to parallel "Mr. Goodbar" with another great film from the 70's,
"Klute", from 1971, which also featured a lost, wandering female in New York City
(Jane Fonda's Academy Award winning performance as a call girl) looking for kicks
with very dangerous characters, and disco music in the soundtrack - both classic,
intense examples of dark and disturbing 70's cinema. DVD PLEASE (!!!) for the psy-
chological thriller "Looking For Mr. Goodbar" for its many fans who want it - the di-
vine Diane Keaton and fabulous music ALONE is worth it. LONG overdue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Did you say Disco??, August 10, 2009
This review is from: Looking for Mr Goodbar (Audio CD)
wow sure do remember Looking for Mr. Goodbar. Mr GOodbar is a 1977 film starring Diane Keaton, Tuesday Weld, and Richard Gere, based on the novel of the same name by Judith Rossner, which was in turn based on the real life murder of New York City schoolteacher Roseann Quinn. I remember mt wife and I seeing this movie.... we married at the young age of 17 and 23 respectively...
The 1977 film starring Diane Keaton as Dunn traces the sexual awakening of a young teacher searching for excitement outside of her mundane existence. Originally in search of the "perfect man", whom she refers to as "Mr. Goodbar", she begins losing control of her life as her sexual appetite grows. Quiet and reserved teacher by day, sexual deviant and bar-hopper by night, Dunn begins to dabble in drugs and unstable men. Her self-destructive behavior is a means of escaping her numbing existence and testing her boundaries and providing excitement in her otherwise safe and boring life. One such sexual partner, played by Richard Gere, turns jealous and possessive, and begins to threaten her life. Ultimately, her sexual addiction and high risk behavior put her life in danger. GREAT soundtrack and WOW what a movie!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars a slice of ( real 70's), November 7, 2008
This review is from: Looking for Mr Goodbar (Audio CD)
I cant believe this isn't available on DVD or CD Now. This is a true slice of the 70s. Although I was young i was observant in the 70s. The 70s depicted these days seems to be more a caricature of what it really was. This soundtrack was what you heard in the movie and its all here. The 70s were
dark for some, the nightlife was fun but it could catch you out there in your search for perfect love. Drug fueled nights with a soulful disco soundtrack. This is a flash of 1977 if you were out looking for fun
and adventure. You had to be careful and hapiness seemed to be possible
every night out in a crowded smokey room filled with people looking
for the same thing. Thelma Houston, Donna Summer, Diana Ross, Bill Withers,Boz Scaggs all tied together with a Marlena Shaw rarity called Don't Ask To Stay Until Tomorrow makes this recording not only a parallel to the movie but also to the time it was released. The executive in charge
of the music on this hit the nail on the head!!
