Book Description

June 1, 2003
Wolf is a vagrant pavement artist on the streets of Amsterdam. He remembers nothing before the hospital, where he was treated for gunshot wounds. The police want to talk to him and sinister men are on his trail—he has to find a way into his mysterious past before his ignorance kills him. Robin Carlson, rebellious daughter of a U.S. general, has a do-it-my-way attitude. Stranded in Amsterdam, she puts her military training to use as a martial arts instructor and part-time bouncer in the city’s nightclubs. Robin’s desperate bid to help her on-again, off-again boyfriend catapults her into the murky world of illegal designer drugs. Wolf follows his heart and blunders into deep trouble. Robin and Wolf's paths are about to cross, but can they survive the Nemesis Project?

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Edgy, gritty, and dark, Rann's debut novel is set in Amsterdam. Street vagrant Jan Wolf has no memory of his previous life. The last thing he remembers is being released from a hospital after suffering a mysterious illness. American Robin Carlson, a thirtysomething martial-arts instructor, has come to Amsterdam to find herself. She comes home late one night to discover that her old pal Cary Bowman has broken into her apartment. He looks nearly deranged and begs Robin to help find his missing friend, Kris de Haan, but refuses to say why he is so frantic. Robin senses inexplicable danger but agrees to help. What she doesn't know is that de Haan is a secret agent set to ferret out the players behind the Nemesis Project, a plan with horrifying global implications. The search to find the missing de Haan will lead her not only into mortal danger but also onto a collision path with the vagrant Jan Wolf, whose amnesia about his past hides terrible secrets. If all this sounds a bit weird, it is. But Rann is able to take a story that in less gifted hands might seem outlandish and make it absolutely mesmerizing. The violence and suspense are palpable, and the characters are completely riveting. A must-read from this promising new writer. Emily Melton

4.0 out of 5 stars Killer Thriller, November 20, 2003
This review is from: Looking for Mr Nobody (Paperback)
Here's an original and refreshing thriller. Part crime novel with a cyber/SF thriller riff. The story revolves around 2 characters Robin Carlson daughter of a U.S. general and all round funky, rebllious grrrl,oh,and part-time bouncer on the side. The 2nd character is Wolf a homeless man and pavement artist who's past is a mystery.Unfortunately Wolf seems to be on someone's hitlist so trouble surrounds his every squat. These 2 inhabit a dark world of experimental drugs and the strong preying on the vulnerable and the lost. All set against the underbelly of Amsterdam(Van Der Valk eat your heart out). A terrific thriller Sue Rann is an author to watch. Oh, and watch out for the men in black, they do exist you know.

5.0 out of 5 stars A grip like steel pincers and a punch like Tyson!, December 10, 2003

I am so happy with this book! When people give books as gifts, sometimes they're way off the mark - but not with this one. I didn't mean to read it so quickly, but it grabbed me on page one and didn't let me get any sleep till I'd finished it! (Well, OK, maybe one or two hours' naptime) The two main characters rock: there's Robin, an American girl in Europe. Her heroine is Lara Croft, but she's more like a disaster looking for a place to happen! She's smart-mouthed, sassy, and rather vulnerable under a tough outer shell. My fave was the other main character, Wolf. He's a vagrant with a mysterious past, and is rather sexily shambly and helpless, as well as being pretty damn heroic when the chips are down, but without being a 'hero' in the usual sense of the word. Ffwwoarr!! Move over Harrison Ford! The plot's very dark and X-Filesish, and it marries with the setting of the wintertime city so well, the atmosphere's really eerie and shadowy. I'd not only recommend this book, I'm a wine buyer, so I'd recommend a comfy armchair, a nice robust Cab-Merlot, a packet of biscuits, a pillow and a warm fire - 'cos this book seriously won't let you put it down till you've finished it. Don't say I didn't warn you! And have fun! HAPPY HAL ;-)
