Grade 2-4-Once again, Patent sparks interest in a species by calling up its popular image, and then follows through by presenting the absorbing facts. Penguin types, habitat, and behavior are addressed with customary accuracy and aplomb, with an emphasis on the emperor breed. She engagingly describes crested penguins as having "...tufts of golden feathers sprouting from their heads like punk hairdos." Sharp, clear, full-color photos are consistently fine, well captioned, and well matched to the text. A discussion of modern threats to the birds includes a poignant shot of an oil-coated jackass penguin. There is an abundance of material available about penguins, but this appealing introduction rises to the top as one of the best.

Gr. 3-5. Good, clear photographs illustrate an introduction to penguins that delivers basic facts about the birds and introduces several different kinds. Intriguing information is scattered through the text--for example, penguins can be found in New Zealand, Africa, Australia, and South America, as well as in Antarctica. Patent devotes one chapter to the Emperor penguin and discusses threats to the birds' survival (human encroachment and pollution, for instance) in another. The photographs, which are very well done, not only capture unique differences among species, but also reflect the harsh and unusual conditions in which the birds live. So it's no wonder I studied biology and became an author myself of a favorite gift when I was young, a book about nature.
