This review is from: Looking Through (Audio CD)
I only found out about this album because I am a fan of Matt Garrison from his work with John Mc Laughlin and Gary Burton. I read an article in a magazine dedicated to bass players (Bass Frontiers) about Garrison and I came across Nat Janoff's name. I had heard of all of the other guys Matt's played with but not Janoff. I did a little digging on the internet and got his CD, "Looking Through." It's a great CD-Garrison and Gene Lake (drummer) are smokin' and Janoff is an excellent guitarist. They sound like they have a great chemistry together. I know all of these guys live in the NYC metro area- I'm waiting for them to do some playing in the city. If your reading this, get some gigs together so more of us can hear you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Who's Nat Janoff?, August 10, 2001

The music industry is a continuous source of surprise for me, especially when I come across amazing, yet relatively unknown talent. Enter Nat Janoff, jazz/fusion guitarist whose album, "Looking Through" contains some of the best original trio jazzfusefunk music I've had the pleasure of listening to in a long time. His bandmates on this album, Matt Garrison, bass player to everyone whose anyone in jazz and a force to be reckoned with on his own (Check out his new solo CD), and Mr. Gene Lake, who, in my opinion, deserves to be more famous than he already ishe is the power behind M'Shell Ndege Ocello's band, among others. "Looking Through," while not the longest playing album around (under one hour) is a well-landscaped musical triumph. The players are amazing, wait, downright scary. Many of the songs, especially "Horizon" and "Spiral" have the hook of future standards, and most gratifying of all, Nat Janoff is not, I repeat, not one of those copycat ripoff-...Whathaveyou guitarists. While influenced, he has his own voice and uses it well. Music aside, I have to commend the artist who designed the cover. I really hate most album covers these days (The bar for cover art was set high for me as I was, uh, still am a fan of Iron Maiden.) I actually like to look at the cover, especially the back, while listening to the album, something I have not done since Iron Maiden! That said, I vote buy this CD!
