Tough times require a powerful God

When life falls apart, where is God? Does he care? Can he fix things? Does he really love us? In an uncertain world, we need to know that God is still in control, that he still cares for us and even suffers with us, and that he has a plan that cannot be defeated.

In his compassionate and caring style, Warren Wiersbe shows you that the answers to these big questions are available, reliable, and encouraging. If you are feeling beaten down, discouraged, or weary in the face of hard times, Warren wants you to know that you are never alone and that the future is bright. His faith-bolstering insights show you that, with God as your source of comfort, you can weather the storms of life--and come out on top.

Warren W. Wiersbe is former pastor of Moody Church and compiler or author of more than 150 books, including 50 People Every Christian Should Know, On Earth as It Is in Heaven, and On Being a Servant of God. He lives in Nebraska.

Originally published as 'Why Us?" in 1984, this reissue by Wiersbe seeks to answer the question: Why do bad things happen to seemingly innocent people? Other questions addressed by Wiersbe include: If God knows everything and is all powerful then why doesn't he stop tragedies from happening? Is God limited in what He can do? Why does God seem so absent during our disappointments and pains? How Big is God? And When life falls apart, how do you pray?

Wiersbe wisely and sensitively tackles these tough questions and many more, pointing us to faith in the grace and power of God as our greatest hope in our time of need. He motivates the reader to not run or hide from God, but to "look up when life gets you down." The author does not minimize the harsh realities of suffering but provides a plethora of resources from the Scriptures to help us cope and grow during the difficulties of life which are sure to come.

If you are looking for a clear, comforting, and helpful book to help you deal with difficult times in life this is a great place to start. Wiersbe writes a book that will not bog you down in philosophical discussion, but give you practical solutions to your grappling with pain and suffering. He will guide you into peace and rest as you encounter God's grace and power in a new and fresh way through the ultimate sufferer - the Lord Jesus Christ.

I slowly read this book during a period in which I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Cancer, and went through a very difficult treatment and recovery process. Personally, I was helped immensely by Wiersbe's care and wisdom and highly recommend this book for those going thorough suffering and would recommend it even more in preparing for future suffering which is inevitable.

My son died in an auto accident early in 2012. I have struggled with depression most of my adult life. This event devastated me. I resigned from my pastorate. I suffer with CHF, CHD, and have been told by my Drs. I could die at any time since Dec. 2001! That should have been me in that casket and him looking at me, not the way it was. This book helped to clarify things for me. I've read other books on this topic. This one was easy to read and understandable. I recommend this book for anyone asking the question, "Why?".

I pre-ordered this book from Amazon because I thought it would be a good read and one that I could use to encourage others. The day it came in the mail I had surgery for a broken ankle... not what I planned for this summer. God's timing was perfect. I recommend this book for everyone, whether you are "up or down"!

I am a voracious reader of a variety of materials, and spiritual enlightenment is of no exception. The mere title of the book drew me in, and I was very optimistic of the results.

First and foremost, this book was written in 1984, a completely different time that the era in which we live. Although that is not always relevant (look at many classic reading materials), it can be in a world that contains less than optimal daily circumstances (autistic children, single parents, divorce, etc.)

With that kept in mind, this was a very slow read for me. I did not experience what the previous reviewers did... possibly because I have lived in perpetual years of challenge that are relatable in some areas to the examples given previously. The book, although scripturally sound, does not truly permeate and translate to that aspect of being "down".

I felt as if the book was very surface, and relatable to a particular audience. Perhaps that audience did not include individuals like myself, because I did not feel connected at all to the writer's conversation to the reader.

Looking Up When Life Gets You Down is written by Warren W. Wiersbe, who has served as a pastor, Bible teacher, and seminary instructor. He is the author of more than 150 books. His conference ministry has taken him to many countries, and he has worked with the Back to the Bible Broadcast for 10 years.

This is a book of encouragement. It uses scripture that will allow us to trust God enough to know that He loves us and will travel with us until we find our way to the Heavenly Realm.

At the end there is a list of excellent quotations and scriptures that are sources of great encouragement.

I recommend this book to mature young people and all adults. I easily give this book five stars!

This is a good book to read when you are going through adversity. I It points out that burdens can be blessings. Look at how much Jesus suffered. What we might be going through is nothing compared to what He went through.
