So fine... so fine... so fine..., December 7, 2007
This review is from: Looking in the Eye of the World (Audio CD)
In the liner notes it says this CD is dedicated to the memory of Jimmy Smith, Eddie Harris, Grover Washington Jr. and Long John Baldry. And it does indeed sound like a labor of love from Mr. Auger. It is one of those rare discs that seems totally inspired by love, an album of the heart.
Also in the liner notes is a beautiful thank-you to Brian's son Karma, of whom it is said, "There would be no Oblivion Express if it were not for Karma." I would say that the album sounds like a dedication to everything the artist has ever loved, especially to precious LIFE itself. This is a special, special album that can sit proudly next to the best work Brian Auger has ever done.
Besides the intention of LOVE that radiates through the music, another reason it sounds so beautiful is the extensive use of the Rhodes electric piano, one of the sweetest sounding instruments ever. On the other hand, there's some intense, funky jazz-jamming going on between the keyboards and a small horn section that is expertly arranged. But don't expect to hear any guitars. Just like Auger's contemporary, Jean Luc Ponty, guitars have now been retired from the sound.
I give this CD my highest recommendation, and if you're a long-time fan like myself, you'll love it. It's classic Brian Auger and it truly reflects the soul of the artist. Beautiful.

too nervous for my tastes, March 22, 2008
This review is from: Looking in the Eye of the World (Audio CD)
I purchased this CD after hearing an interview with Brian Auger interspersed with some of his music. I was captivated by the voice of his daughter, and by one song in particular (by the same name as the album). She has a beautiful earthy and sultry voice, and the song itself has a great jazz arrangement.
While I am happy with all the pieces she sings on this CD (and the title song is well worth the price of the CD), I find all the instrumentals a bit hyper in tempo and feel. I find myself getting more and more anxious while listening to the instrumentals ... and I am generally not an anxious person! It's a shame ... all are great musicians, and while I do like upbeat stuff, this feels like it was recorded on meth.
