Book Description

March 26, 2009
In this collection of essays & poems on identity, belonging and otherness Alicja Mann writes from the perspective of the other European (from Eastern Europe) and the other American (an immigrant). She came to the States from Poland at a time when it was still dominated by Soviet-style Communism. In her new country she transformed herself from a scientist to a writer. These essays and poems take the reader on a journey through space and time addressing issues of identity, alienation, belonging, and responsibility. Sometimes funny, sometimes tearful, but always thoughtful, this book charms and provokes. It invites the reader to sit and reflect, as symbolized by the art on the cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking book to savor and share, April 20, 2010
This review is from: Looking at the World Twice (Perfect Paperback)
This book has become one of my favorites. The essays and poems are enlightening and insightful. A central theme of the book concerns what it's like to move to another country, live in a new culture, in a new language, while gradually growing a new identity. Mann writes about a variety of subjects -- living under Communism, respecting food, world hunger, motherhood, and love - to name a few. Her essay on the Vietnam War Memorial brought me to tears. When I read her story about Thanksgiving, entitled "Pilgrim," I remember thinking that it was like finding a pearl in a shell.

Reading this book is an intimate experience. The cover art by GC Myers, and its resonance with the title, is an additional pleasure. Though the content is different, I think of this book as both a talisman and a touchstone, in the way that I think of my copy of Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. I recommend Looking at the World Twice highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A picture into another's world, May 31, 2009
This review is from: Looking at the World Twice (Perfect Paperback)
Using poetry and prose, Alicja Mann's command of her non-native language paints a picture that gives me a view into her world. It also makes me curious as to the influences of children's stories on all of us.
