This personal memoir of Mary Alice's family's ranch in the Big Sur mountains is poorly written by an amateur writer, as is typical for such a memoir. If you know any of the region or of the "players" in this family history then it's worthwhile.
I was interested to know that this was never a working ranch -- just a large and remote family summer-getaway.

This book was a treasure of information and a time line that describes Mary Alice Baldwin's early life on a remote ranch in Central California. I recommend it to anyone interested in that history as well as anyone with an interest in archaeology, the profession of Ms. Baldwin. Her writing style is sparse, descriptive and is illuminated by her love for the land (over 2000 acres) that nurtured her in her youth. I think it is a fine testament of pioneer spirit.
