1.0 out of 5 stars A fine film school project, otherwise pretty awful, August 5, 2008
This review is from: Looking for Leonard (DVD)
Whew. I'm not sure how this one made it to wide release because it is pretty awful. I'm only reviewing the first one third to one half of the movie as I stopped paying attention about 1/3 the way through and ended it at about the 1/2 way point. So what's wrong with this movie? To start with, the dialogue comes across as being read aloud; the camera work seems amateurish as one might find at a film school, and the same goes for the editing. As to the plot, I'm not sure that I can do it justice as there was so much going on that it caused one's head to spin. Perhaps the director knew this was his one shot so he threw in every possible plot device he could think of.
So there's a trio of armed robbers (one of whom, the female lead, is a repressed author attending writing class), and a Czech immigrant worker (film takes place in Montreal) who flies in to find the landlord who rented to him died before his arrival, and the company that hired him went out of business a day later (ha, ha, what mirth). He meets the female lead in the supermarket as she shoplifts and gets caught, they flee together, she ends up killing one of her fellow outlaws, but the Czech gets blamed for it, yet he's in love with her and they go on the run together and....
Okay, so you get the picture. I know that on paper this almost sounds like it could make for a madcap, rather wonderful and funny movie but it doesn't in this case. As I said, the acting is poor, the writing worse and these are the two best things about it.
Good sportsmanship keeps one hanging on for a while but before too long enough is enough.
I don't recommend this at all. Oh, and the Leonard reference is to Leonard Cohen who lived in Montreal at the time. He probably gets tied into this a bit more later in the film but who can be bothered to find out?

Could someone please tell me how it ends? I taped it, and it cut off when she ran out of her apartment after her ticket was found...
