There are those who feel that having security on an Android smartphone isn't necessary, or that it can slow down your device. These are misconceptions, as any device that connects to the Internet can and will eventually be hit, and should it happen, the results can be disastrous. And there are some apps that will not slow your Android device down.

Lookout Mobile Security is a proven product that does more than offering basic antivirus protection. It offers a wide range of highly effective mobile device-specific security features, and it does this with a minimal performance hit on your Android smartphone. It should be noted that users with a Kindle Fire HD should look for the Lookout Mobile Security (Kindle Tablet Edition) app, as this one is slightly different.

The 8.4.1 version that was the latest at the time of this writing is less than 5.2MB in size, and it's a fast download that takes less than 60 seconds. Once installed it will protect your device from malware, viruses, and spyware, but be sure that your device is running Android 2.1 or newer.

I tested this app on my Samsung Galaxy S III, and it took just a couple of minutes to open Lookout, select the Security module, and then run a full scan... just like you would do with your computer. I spent about fifteen minutes following the prompts and setting up Lookout Mobile Security and everything ran smoothly. It asked for my email address and a private password (no problem as this app carries the TRUSTe seal). It did a full security scan, and luckily found no dangerous files.

I have the basic/free version of this app and never paid it any mind until yesterday when I left my phone at a restaurant. You should first know that this app will secretly take a picture and alert its user via email if someone unsuccessfully attempts to enter your password multiple times. To continue with my story; I left my phone at Brio - a "nice" Italian restaurant in Atlanta - yesterday and called to ask that it be put away so that I could retrieve it later in the day, after I got off of work. Sometime after 5pm, I received an email notifying me that someone was attempting to break in to my phone. His picture was attached with a map showing the location of the restaurant. I called to notify the manager and it turns out that the person was an employee of theirs who had just come to work. He noticed my phone waiting to be picked up, and decided he would steal it. If I had not showed up to the restaurant with the employee's picture that was emailed to me, they would have never found my phone. Unfortunately, he did a factory reset and I had not backed up my contacts. Fortunately, I now have my phone back and he is no longer employed at the restaurant. Needless to say, I am a happy customer!!

I'm new to the whole mobile scene, so I knew I needed something to keep me in check when it came to downloading stuff. As a download/app junkie on other devices, I knew it would be no different with my Droid 2. I found Lookout by browsing through the android app store and was blown away that this is being offered for free. You can have all your downloads instantly and seamlessly scanned without you ever really knowing that it's monitoring you. A little icon sits in your tray but besides that, you won't know it's protecting you. You can sign up to have a weekly email sent to you from the website to inform you of changes to your phone and to see where you stand in security for your device. If your phone is lost or stolen, you can lock it remotely from the website and even have it scream (let off a sound) to alert others or even you of it's location.

There is a pay version that opens up some premium features but I haven't done that as of yet. I haven't written it off yet, but it's there if I need it. For everyone like me who wants peace of mind on their mobile device, you can't get much better than Lookout Mobile Security.

Numerous people are saying that anti-malware is not needed on android. What rock did you crawl out from under? Android is the new, favorite target for viruses and malware. If it does not work on your phone, fine... the developers can not account for EVERY configuration.
I use a Droid X on Verizon and I have NONE of the issues that these other supposed Droid/Verizon users have.
And as far as Verizon saying its bad, Verizon's position is that if anything is wrong with the phone, it must be an app so reset the phone and tell the client not to load certain apps. They have no basis in fact to blame this particular app any more than any other. And it does not drain your battery unless you have it configured to backup every 10 seconds.

so far I am very pleased. This product is installed on my cell and tablet. It allows me track my devices, make them 'scream', lock them, track them and/or wipe them if they have been stolen. I particularly love this as any thief would find themselves in possession of worthless unusable devices with the risk of getting caught with them. Love that.

Same thing happened to me, but, thankfully, Verizon said this was a known issue with the app, so I uninstalled it before trying a new phone. My phone works great again.
