Good collection; sound is rotten. Billed as "Digitally remastered" (see, e.g., liner notes), this version has the same severe audio range limitations as the original. I'd been waiting a long time for a CD version, only to find there's NO improvement in sound quality. Bummed.

Snow has a wide range and an excellent sense of nuance. She is easily one of the best interpretive singers of her generation (i.e., early '70s singer/songwriters). Only unlike some of her peers she is a master of not only pop, rock and folk styles but jazz, blues, standards, soul and gospel material.

On her third album she gives beautifully nuanced, winning intepretations of "Teach Me Tonight" (an oft covered standard perfectly done here); "Don't Let Me Down" and "Shakey Ground."

She gives a sexy, bluesy performance on "In My Girlish Days."Mercy On Those" is emotionally compelling, building to a smart climax.

Her own compositions such as "Autobiography" and "Stand Up On The Rock" are spirited, musically adventurous numbers that showcase her potent voice and sensitive songwriting pen.

After you purchase her debut or one of her two collections, this is the next logical place to go. Excellent.

This singer is great! The music in this series is mellow to high spirited.'Stand upon a rock" Mercy On Those" are a few of my old favorites. The song lyrics can inspire and uplift. She is soulful and her voice is one of a kind.

This a a classic Phoebe recording. Both beautiful and funky.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true original hard to categorize!, March 21, 2004
This review is from: It Looks Like Snow (Audio CD)
Phoebe Snow, late of so many commercial jingles, was, for a brief time, a rarity in the music industry. She was one of those singers that was so unique that she transcended many popular genres.

No better example of her skill can be found than on "It Looks Like Snow". She tackled the blues ("Girlish Ways"), the torch song ("Teach Me Tonight"), an anthem ("Have Mercy on Me"), a somber ballad ("Don't Bring Me Down"), and funk ("Shaky Ground"). These and the other five tracks show a versatility that is scarce in the music biz.

Perhaps, it was her singular talent that made her impossible to "pigeonhole" or program in the radio formats of the day.

Thankfully, modern audiences are a little more diverse and are likely to be more appreciative of this lost 70's wonder.

I highly recommended this bit of "frozen precipitation" for one's music library.

I'm listening to the Phoebe Snow (It looks like snow)I ordered from Amazon.com. This album (CD!) is a classic. It sounds even better than I remembered. One thing I wish I knew before I purchased this CD was that the Yellow Label has such diverse and eclectic artists such as Ike & Tina Turner, Spirit and the Isley Brothers! WoW!!! My friends and family are going to find some amazing music in their stockings this holiday season!

Thanks

A friend first introduced me to Phoebe Snow with this album (vinyl back then) in 1988. It has since been replaced in my collection with a CD because the record was wearing out from play. Little did I know that I was on the road to Snowdom! Let It Snow is, in My Humble Opinion, her all time best. It combines gospel, blues, ballads and jazz all vocalized in her ethereal 3-octave range. The accompaniment ranges from acoustic guitar to The Golden Age Jazz Band to a string orchestra, all complemented by the rich vocals of Phoebe Snow. "Autobiography (Shine, Shine, Shine)" starts the tracks with a rousing gospel/jazz number. She breathes new life into Gene de Paul's "Teach Me Tonight" with a sexy, sultry rendering of the old classic. "Stand Up On the Rock" is a classic feel-good gospel/jazz number that will have you up clapping and dancing. It's worth a listen just for the trombone improv. If you've never listened to Phoebe before, this CD will make you a devoted fan. It's a definite "must" for any jazz fan..

3.0 out of 5 stars Shine shine shine, February 21, 2008
This review is from: It Looks Like Snow (Audio CD)
1976 and women in rock, however scarce, didn't necessarily have to be pinups. Like Janis Ian, another hybridized cabaret coolster, Phoebe Snow muscled her away onto the charts and radio with quiet, clever, authentic slices of feminine perspicuity - and chops galore. Her voice is a fierce March wind of wisdom and restlessness. Alas, her (and her producer's) muse fled on "side two" but the first 5 tracks are breathtaking - especially "Teach Me Tonight," the kind of standard that eats poseurs alive, Snow masters with sly authority (aided marvelously by arranger Sonny Burke, who did the chart for Peggy Lee's 1964 version of the same tune). For most of the LP, the production is very '76, what can ya say (and the otherwise good choice "Don't Let Me Down" got smothered in sonic decor), but, luckily, less-is-more rules for the downhome twangy blues "In My Girlish Days," a stunner in storytelling acumen. Oh, yeh, that opening track - killer diller original, brave and heartbreaking, with a ragtime kick. More to this ol gal than "Poetry Man"! (Note: Snow's 1997 cover of Laura Nyro's "Time and Love" shows she still has the juice, in spades.)
