Kindergarten-Grade 2-- A canoe ride around a northern lake reveals many animals in their native habitat. A pair of loons is located, and the second half of the book concerns their courtship and nesting behaviors. The title and jacket photograph will have young readers at first wondering where the loons are, and at the end wondering what happened to the canoe and its rider. The effect is of two separate events joined, but not successfully integrated. A mood of serenity in a wilderness area is created, but little factual information about existing plant and animal life is given in the brief text. An afterword (for older readers) focuses on the loon and the importance of lake nesting sites for its survival. The spacious open format with large print and photographs is attractive, but insets of smaller pictures are somewhat distracting and at times make size relationships difficult to determine. Simple captions are in very small type. Libraries needing books about northern lake regions may find Loon Lake useful, but Barbara Esbensen's Great Northern Diver: The Loon (Little, 1990) is more informative and satisfying. --Diane Nunn, Richard E.
