For Thanksgiving, I picked up a number of version of Fluxx: Cthuhlu, Star, Zombie, and my brother had Monty Python. We played the various versions for several days. I have to say that purely on mechanics and fun value alone, Cthuhlu ranks in the lead followed by Monty Python. Star Fluxx was simply too bland, Zombie Fluxx too random and boring.

The artwork is amazing, the attention to Lovecraft's lore is amazing... if you're a fan of Lovecraft, or even if you're not, if you have one Fluxx box to pick up, pick up Cthulhu

If you are familiar with the basic game of Fluxx, there are a few new rules in this set that you will need to learn. They're not complicated, however, and the included instructions explains them well.

We had a lot of fun playing this variation.

One example of the new rules is the "Ungoal" This is like a Goal from the original Fluxx, however if the conditions of the ungoal are met, the game ends and nobody wins. :) It's pure evil, just like Cthulhu.

Note: This review assumes the reader is familiar with Fluxx mechanics in general.

Pros:
(1) Fluxx + Lovecraft = Good
(2) New card mechanics, including Investigator, Doom Count and "joined" Creepers (that attach to a Keeper)
(3) Ungoals add an interesting twist, particularly when the rule forcing them to be played is down.
(4) Two promo cards available (can be found at the company web-site if your game store doesn't have them)
(5) I really enjoy the Lovecraft flavor of this game, and the creative way that the lore was worked into the cards (particularly the Necronomicon)

Caveats:
(1) People who don't like randomness in their gaming tend not to like Fluxx. It's not true that there is no strategy at all, BUT strategy only takes you so far and can be easily disrupted by the strong random element.
(2) The Ungoals can make it so that no one wins, and some people may find that frustrating. However, we generally play with the optional Secret Cultist rule, where if an Ungoal is met, the Secret Cultist wins, and someone usually has that card at the end. I've only played one game where there was no winner because of an Ungoal.
(3) People who aren't fond of the Lovecraft mythos, or for the dark gloom and doom flavor, might prefer a different version of Fluxx.

The rules of the game change as you play, a great fit for the Cthulhu Mythos. You start with a basic rule card which tells you how to begin the game. As you play cards will be drawn which change the rules of the game. Keeping up with current rules is easy as every card tells you when it can be played and how it affects the game.

This edition of Fluxx provides several new mechanics on top of standard Fluxx. The primary curiosity for me was doom. Some cards are harbingers of doom while others prevent it. Doom primarily comes in to play in evaluating ungoals; similar to goals but they provide a way for all players to loose the game.

Friends and I played it a few times, but it didn't catch on. It's fast paced and the rounds don't take too long. Lost interest kinda fast.

It's a great franchise and a good game but I would not introduce this one to beginners because it takes more time and it's confusing unless you have play other Fluxx games.
