It seems that Warner Home Video has lied to us about not repeating any Golden Collection Cartoons in this new Looney Tunes Super Stars series. I also assume Jerry Beck has lost his say on what goes into these DVDs. Japan got a new set of Tweety DVDs that feature cartoons not issued on DVD in the U.S. There are still 25 Tweety & Sylvester cartoons not released to DVD in the U.S.
This 4th Super Stars DVD release was originally going to be a Porky Pig set until Warner thought it would be mostly B&W cartoons from the 1930's. By my count there are 10 Porky Pig color cartoons & 10 Porky Pig & Daffy Duck color cartoons not released yet, so that argument doesn't hold.
The official statement from Warner Home Video:
"The first two releases of the Looney Tunes Super Stars series were enthusiastically received by consumers and we are thrilled to offer these next two installments from the series," said Amit Desai, WHV Vice President of Family, Animation and Partner Brands Marketing.Read more ›
Not that it isn't great stuff. If you DON'T have the LTGC's, then I'd give this DVD 5 stars. But I do have the LTGC's and the prospect of not getting previously unreleased Sylvester and Tweety shorts is DETHPICABLE!!!
What you get here are the 2 S & T shorts that won Oscars (Tweetie Pie and Birds Anonymous) and at least one other (Mouse and Garden) that was nominated for an Oscar. Notably missing are Hyde and Go Tweet (where Tweety drinks some of the Hyde monster formula and he and Sylvester take turns being the hunter and the hunted), Rebel Without Claws (which takes the S & T formula to a Civil War battlefield), Dog Pounded (which features a Pepe Le Pew cameo), and Hawaiian Aye Aye (which takes S & T to Hawaii where a shark takes the place of the bulldog in guarding Tweety). I also loved Tom Tom Tomcat which depicts Sylvester and a bunch of other cats as Hollywood-style Indians, but I can see why this one will NEVER be released on an official Warner Bros. DVD.
So keep checking You Tube for these and other S & T shorts that won't make it to DVD.
1. Fowl Weather
2. A Streetcat Named Sylvester
3. Catty Cornered
4. Dog Pounded (one of their best, release this award nominated gem somehow Warner)
5. Muzzle Tough
6. Tweety's Circus
7. Tree Cornered Tweety
8. Tugboat Granny
9. Greedy for Tweety
10. Bird in a Bonnet
11. Tweet and Lovely
12. Tweet Dreams
13. Hyde & Go Tweet (another sadly missed "must")
14. Trip for Tat
15. Rebel Without Claws
Now wouldn't that be a collection to behold? The Foghorn Leghorn one isn't perfect either (for starters I would have replaced "Broken Leghorn", which is also needlessly duplicated for "The High and the Flighty"), but I will still buy that for the new shorts. But ONLY that one for this round of the Super Stars series.
1. "Tweetie Pie" 2. "Bad Ol' Putty Tat" 3. "All-a-Birrd" 4. "Canary Row" 5. "Putty Tat Trouble"
6. "Room and Bird" 7. "Tweety's SOS" 8. "Tweet Tweet Tweety" 9. "Gift Wrapped" 10. "Ain't She Tweet"
11. "Snow Business" 12. "Satan's Waitin'" 13. "The Last Hungry Cat" 14. "Birds Anonymous" and
15. "Tweety & the Beanstalk."
P.S. Other than a "Yogi Bear" movie trailer, there aren't any special features.
Yes, several of these wildly hilarious cartoons have been released to DVD or home video before. Here's the upside, though: this relatively low-priced collection is really meant for those consumers who either didn't want or, more importantly, couldn't afford a set of the "Looney Tunes Golden Collection." Enjoy these wonderfully timeless cartoons of the hapless tuxedo cat and the not-quite-so-innocent canary with a youngster who has never seen them before, and see what laughs and smiles that Sylvester & Tweety can still evoke.
My only suggestion is to find a great sale price first.
Rating: 10/10 (appropriate for all ages).
