Book Description

May 1, 2011
Loop-d-Loop Lace is the third volume in the groundbreaking Loop-d-Loop series by Teva Durham. In this installment, Durham shatters the idea that lace is old-fashioned by presenting more than 30 cutting-edge knitting designs that are as up-to-the-minute style-wise as they are thoroughly steeped in lace tradition. The projects cover a wide spectrum, from classic shawls and camisoles that utilize traditional laceweight yarns and revered stitch patterns, to ultramodern pullovers and accessories in bold colors and chunky yarns that showcase lace at a larger scale. Projects range from easy to advanced. Detailed swatch photos throughout illuminate the stitchwork, while color fashion photos show off the finished garments with the series' signature modern, romantic appeal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Teva Durham Fans Will Not Be Disappointed April 22, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Teva Durham is an acquired taste: her designs are always innovative, but not always wearable enough or "pretty" enough that you would want to invest the time needed to make them. The designs in LOOP D-LOOP LACE are no exception: they represent the designer's latest experiments based on mesh stitches, eyelets, lace samplers, leaf stitches, and traditional lace doilies; and not all are successful.

Three designs that I like well enough to consider making (and which justify the book purchase) are the purse stitch cardigan with flower brooch (a simple, shaped, mesh cardigan), the closed bud pullover (a long-sleeved, high-necked sweater with a leaf-design yoke, upper body, and flared cuffs), and the hug-me-tight cardigan (a shrug constructed with an elaborate sideways-knit lace back panel, an openwork front panel, a picked-up collar, and picked-up elbow-length sleeves).

Three "wow" designs that should interest experienced knitters are the lace puff bloomers (pretty knee-length pants with lace at knees and waist only--but does anyone want to wear knitted bloomers today?), the art deco leaves cardigan (a long-sleeved allover-lace-pattern cardigan with flared sleeves and asymmetrical front closing), and the Shetland shawl dress (a hard-to-describe overdress with asymmetrical half-skirt, entirely constructed of diagonal panels of traditional Shetland lace patterns).

Among the less successful designs are the sunray medallion tunic (a flared-sleeve pullover with a huge doily medallion on the front), the split leaves ottoman cover (a large-scale-lace item knitted on US 15 needles at 12 stitches and 16 rows to 7 inches), and the various large-scale-lace shawls, cowls, boleros, and capelets knit in heavy yarn (the book cover photo shows a large-scale-lace bolero). The large-scale-lace designs provide near-instant knitter gratification, but, as a matter of personal taste, I always feel that heavy yarns overpower the whole concept of knitted lace. Shouldn't lace be delicate and complex?

As a book of wearable lace patterns, I rate LOOP D-LOOP LACE at 3 stars. As a book of Teva Durham designer patterns, I rate it at 5 stars, because the patterns move forward from the ones in Durham's previous book (see Loop-d-Loop: More Than 40 Novel Designs for Knitters); and because Durham has included many interesting explanations of her thinking that went into the creation of these new lace designs. Overall, this book merits 4 stars.

I really wanted to like this one. I really enjoyed the original Durham Loop-d-Loop book and thought that it had many novel designs that were unique, but still functional. Yes, you can wear any of the knit lace numbers from Loop-d-Loop lace - but first off, the patterns seem kind of um... ordinary, especially for Teva Durham. The one on the cover is probably the most wearable, but upon closer inspection - this is just a typical cardigan with lace panels, ruffles and 3/4 sleeves. The rest of the book has things like a lace blouse with what looked like a side zipper (but was really some kind of funky closures) - kind of ugly and impractical or lace panels in pullovers that would require you to wear a shirt underneath. Sure, all these patterns can be modded to suit one's taste, but they all have sort of a hodge-podge novice-knitter feel to them, rather than designs that had a lot of thought put into them. It almost feels as if this was just thrown together. The butterfly lace tunic is probably the best, followed by the bell sleeve blouse - though there are a lot of complaints that there are mistakes on the sleeves. I seriously don't feel there is anything in here that is spectacular enough to purchase the book for - nothing that can't just as easily be found in the stitch dictionaries of any of the Walker books and then added to some traditional piece of clothing or otherwise found as a free pattern on ravelry. I've seen better lace wraps, more spectacular lace shawls, better designed and beautiful lace-panel sweaters and generally better thought out designs. As for projects like the ottoman cover or the sunflower satchel - um... anyone with a bit of knitting skills can do these projects without a pattern, except maybe a stitch dictionary. Meh...

I really appreciate Teva Durham's unique designs. She does not disappoint in this book - her lace designs are unusual and beautiful. Even if you don't knit anything from this book, its worth having to enjoy.

I was looking forward to this book but am somewhat disappointed. The projects are not very complex and while the photography is exquisite, the concepts feel a little forced. Read more

I just got this book today but I have looked through it four or five times. There are good introductions to each chapter, and a nice variety of sizes for most projects. Read more
