Review

From the Foreword of LOOPTAIL from His Holiness the Dalai Lama:

This book by Bruce Poon Tip encourages me. I met Bruce in May this year. In today's materialistic world where people risk becoming slaves to money, Bruce seems to be one of those entrepreneurs who understand that human dignity, freedom and genuine well-being are more important than the mere accumulation of wealth. Wealth should serve humanity, and not vice versa. The stark economic inequality between rich and poor is not only morally wrong, but is the source of many practical problems, including war, sectarian violence, and the social tensions created by large-scale economic migration.

Not only in his business, but also in this account of his adventures, Bruce Poon Tip is making an active contribution to creating a more peaceful and happier world, while at the same time creating a model from which others can learn.

"I've never bribed my way out of a Burmese prison, nor have I climbed anything higher than a few flights of stairs, but Bruce has the courage not only to brave these, but also to lead a company with the candor and character demanded from our twenty-first-century business leaders. Executives take note, the internet age will not be forgiving to companies that fail to walk the talk of being a socially responsible, high-quality business.
-Alexis Ohanian, startup guy: reddit & Hipmunk

"LOOPTAIL gives readers an insightful glimpse into Bruce's world and his philosophy of constantly seeking out new adventures while simultaneously ensuring his company maintains a sense of social responsibility."
-Tony Hsieh, author of the New York Times bestseller Delivering Happiness and CEO of Zappos.com, Inc.

"Bruce Poon Tip has created an awesome company that is changing the world. As both a fan and a customer, I loved peeking behind the curtain to see all the greasy inner gears whirl and clink with beauty. LOOPTAIL is not only an incredible story, but also serves as a how-to guide for creating happiness in the workplace!"
-Neil Pasricha, author of the New York Times bestseller The Book of Awesome

"In LOOPTAIL, Bruce Poon Tip shares an entertaining and engaging account of his entrepreneurial success story of how he built his company from the ground up, and how elevating customer and employee engagement to a higher purpose can also be great for business."
-Marc Benioff, co-founder and CEO, Salesforce.com

The most popular career advice includes the suggestion to do what you love and love what you do because what you love to do is probably what you do best. I think there is wisdom in that suggestion (not everyone agrees with it) and I thought about it as I began to work my way through this book. According to Bruce Poon Tip, he developed his business philosophy based on the "Looptail": a three-pronged approach that enables any business to be -- simultaneously -- profit-driven, purpose-driven, and people-driven. It's so named because everything invested in a business is returned in abundance in terms of profitability and employee loyalty. For me, a Looptail approach creates a win-win-win situation. Sustainable profitability ensures substantial monetary as well as non-monetary (i.e. psychological and spiritual) benefits for stakeholders, those whom they are privileged to serve, and the communities in which the given enterprise conducts business.

Poon Tip cites his own company, G Adventures, as a case in point. Not only does its business philosophy explain its extraordinary success in a global marketplace; that success probably could not have been achieved without it. More to the point, that same philosophy (with only minor modifications) can help almost any other purpose-driven company to achieve sustainable profitability, whatever its size and nature may be.

This is what Poon Tip has in mind when observing, "Once you clearly define your purpose as a company, and you build the right team of people who see their work as more of a calling than a job, that question of whether to keep growing just disappears. The more you grow, the more you can accomplish.

Common knowledge has always been that if you want to make a positive change in the world, the ways to do that are through volunteer service, or through an non-for-profit organization. The Looptail challenges that very notion and shows how a business can show incredible growth and profit, and at the same time addressing deep-seeded social problems and making the world a better place.

The stories are riveting, the characters are captivating and the whole book cover to cover is full of inspiration. The Looptail makes me feel like I could go start my own business!

In the past 5 years, I’ve taken a handful of trips with G Adventures and have thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of them for many reasons. As soon as this book was released, I was anxious to hear from the man who started this company with such a unique product and service proposition. That said, I was a bit disappointed in the content. The stories surrounding each tip and piece of advice seemed a bit stretched and enhanced. While Bruce Tip Poon very overtly tries to come off as a humble servant to society, again his attempt comes off as a bit contrived and unnatural in order to fit the mold of a typical book about business. I’ve been a business professional and a student of literature on leadership and business for 15+ years, and I’ve heard most of this advice many times before and in the same type of voice. If he could have simply told the story in a more natural, stream-of-conscious way about the company’s humble beginnings and what it’s become today, he would have been much more successful in providing a unique point of view. Simply, it’s just a bit too forced. Unfortunately, reading this book has given me a new impression of G Adventures’ leadership team that’s not on par with the one I had before.

This is a great read for anyone having a desire to start a business that is more purpose driven than profit driven. It takes you on the journey of Bruce Poon Tip, who started G.A.P. Adventures with two personal credit cards and turned his bold idea of sharing authentic travel experiences with others, while helping the local people and the economies of the places G.A.P.'s travelers visit, into the largest, privately owned adventure travel company in the world. It's a true example of perseverance for any business leader, as you read Bruce's bumpy ride along the way with a sunken ship, company name change and several other hardships to become G Adventures, the dynamic social enterprise that it is today.

As you read this inspiring story, you can understand why the Dalai Lama chose to write the forward to Bruce's book. Can one company really change the world? After reading this book, you'll want to become part of the G Nation movement. Can travel create a path to world peace? The Captain of the G Adventures ship thinks so, and he explains how other people can create an environment of Freedom and Happiness that is inspirational to it's employees and customers. I hope business leaders and people that want to make a difference in the world read this guidebook on how real, lasting change is made. I look forward to seeing where Bruce (aka The Honey Badger) takes G Adventures next. Peace!

Not only did this book help me understand how one person can make an impact in many ways..
Working your way from bottom to top with only so much makes your realize that life is not easy but eventually if your up for it, you could accomplish anything you set your mind to. i have given 5 stars because in my opinion everything he did took effort and commitment along with sacrifice. Nothing comes easy in this life and he knew what he had to do.. I recommend this book!
