Book Description

Fun, romantic, cozy mystery featuring amateur sleuth and antique store owner, Lucy Mathews. Lucy and her dog find romance and murder in the mountains of Montana.

Lucy Mathews, crime reporter turned antiques dealer, avoids confrontation like a home perm. She even lets a cat shove her around.

When Lucy trips over the body of a buckskin-clad relics trader, her ex-boss asks her to cover the story. She tries to tell him no, but old habits die hard and soon she finds herself directly in the path of a killer and the exasperating, if attractive, detective in charge.

Can Lucy catch a killer or is this the last confrontation for her—period?

1.0 out of 5 stars Free Download, Overpriced July 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The premise sounded good, the price ($0.00) was right, so I downloaded the book for a light Saturday afternoon read.

Pros: Story quickly gets to The Murder. Grammar, spelling, and punctuation are within acceptable limits (laudable, for a self-published novel). The total book is short, approximately 189 pages long, just right for a summer afternoon or a day at the beach.

Cons: Story line is mired in excess uninteresting detail. Authors seem compelled to account for every minute of each character's time, which is TMI! After progressing about 10% into the book, I started skimming, hoping that I would reach a point where the plot would take off and then I could slow down and enjoy reading to the end. After skimming to the 30% mark, I gave up. There may well be a good story in there somewhere (clearly other reviewers enjoyed this work), but my patience ran out before I could find it. This book would benefit greatly from a firm editor, probably turning it into a short-ish novella or long-ish short story.

Troll Alert: You notice how negative reviews are rated unhelpful and the positive reviews, no matter how vague, are rated helpful? Ah for the old days when we were able to rely upon the objective assessment of our fellow readers!

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 Star for a 1st Mystery - Fun Good Read June 16, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Well worth the 99 cents and well worth trying out a new author. Did get a bit frustrated with Lucy and she will have to get a whole lot more backbone in the next book to keep me reading. Would have liked a bit more background on her shop/business also and how she managed to spend so much time away from it? Businesses in seasonal tourist type locals, especially small, one owner types, usually need more actual hands on work. And if she was writing for a small town paper previously, where did she get the money/inventory/knowledge of antiques/etc. to open the store? Plus, with a good murder story and her background in writing for a newspaper, she should have been able to sell the story herself to another paper and thumbed her nose at an editor who treats her like a dingbat, even if she is at times. All in all, a fun read for a first time out-enough to make me want to read a second one. A little tightening up of characters/background, a bit more attention to reality (yes, cozies let you suspend some belief but not all) and this could be a really good little mystery series.

1.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't go on after Chapter 5 February 13, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was ok with the first couple chapters. A little slow but ok. It takes me a couple chapters to really get into the story and want to keep reading. USUALLY. But, I can see what other reviewers meant when they said the author has to explain what goes on for every minute of the characters time. It got to be exhausting just reading all the detail. I gave up after reading the end of the 4th chapter when her soon to be love interest and her were talking in a coffee shop. She didnt know but had some coffee foam on her mouth. So, I guess to be flirty her guy wiped it off with his thumb and licked it and said something along the lines "come see me sometime.. Don't really remember. To me that was just disgusting and trying too hard to have a steamy romance between the characters. Kinda creepy to be honest. Major turn off. The author tries too hard to be funny and witty. After a while, your like "Come one get on with it already!"

1.0 out of 5 stars B...O...R...I...N...G February 15, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
One of my personal indicators of whether a book is a worthwhile read, is the amount of anticipation I feel in between reading opportunities. In the case of this book, the only anticipation I felt was in just getting it finished. I really wanted to stop early on; I was so bored that by chapter 8 I was ready to call it quits. I got on and read some of the reviews...and found one reviewer who got lambasted for putting in a poor review without actually finishing the book. I'm sorry, but if a book is so uninteresting that a reader has no desire to finish...this should be considered a legitimate review. So now that I finished the book and am "entitled" to share my opinion, I find that I wish I would have been as smart as the reviewer who didn't bother to finish. At least they saved themselves some wasted hours of their life. But hey! At least I now know everyone who lives in Helena...AND what they are wearing...

The main problem I had with this book, other than being uninteresting, is that I just didn't care. I wasn't all that interested in the main character...what she did or who she associated with. The lame attempt at setting her up with a love interest wasn't even what I'd consider within the realm of "romance". A murder took place, and it didn't matter to me who actually did it; and usually that is one of the pleasures of reading a mystery--trying to figure out "who done it", before the perpetrator is revealed. But unfortunately, I felt no connection with any of the characters in this story. I prefer an author will bring the reader to the point of investing in the characters (at least the main character!) and in their storyline. The more we are emotionally invested, the greater the book's impact. But for me, there was absolutely NO impact--emotionally, or otherwise.

3.0 out of 5 stars Say nothing at all July 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I wanted several titles for this review. 'Banality at it's best.' 'Magnificently mundane.' 'Does Cozy mean slow?' I've settled on If your have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all. Ms. Davies does write a thorough, clean text. Precision and procedure are her strong points. That and the dog. I loved the dog. He was the bright spot of my experience. She got the dog just perfect. She probably got the protagonist too, but I chafe at the fact Lucy started out a timid mouse and ended up the same. A little more growth in the character arc would have done a lot for my opinions.

At least I finished it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dusty Deals a bit cliche-ridden
While I like murder mystery stories as in this book, I find the constant 'digging', yanking and other such terms annoying. It is ok but a bit annoying.
