Book Description

Lucy Mathews, crime reporter turned antiques dealer, avoids confrontation like a home perm. She even lets a cat shove her around.

When Lucy trips over the body of a buckskin-clad relics trader, her ex-boss asks her to cover the story. She tries to tell him no, but old habits die hard and soon she finds herself directly in the path of a killer and the exasperating, if attractive, detective in charge.

Can Lucy catch a killer or is this the last confrontation for her—period?

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 Star for a 1st Mystery - Fun Good Read June 16, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Well worth the 99 cents and well worth trying out a new author. Did get a bit frustrated with Lucy and she will have to get a whole lot more backbone in the next book to keep me reading. Would have liked a bit more background on her shop/business also and how she managed to spend so much time away from it? Businesses in seasonal tourist type locals, especially small, one owner types, usually need more actual hands on work. And if she was writing for a small town paper previously, where did she get the money/inventory/knowledge of antiques/etc. to open the store? Plus, with a good murder story and her background in writing for a newspaper, she should have been able to sell the story herself to another paper and thumbed her nose at an editor who treats her like a dingbat, even if she is at times. All in all, a fun read for a first time out-enough to make me want to read a second one. A little tightening up of characters/background, a bit more attention to reality (yes, cozies let you suspend some belief but not all) and this could be a really good little mystery series.

1.0 out of 5 stars Free Download, Overpriced July 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The premise sounded good, the price ($0.00) was right, so I downloaded the book for a light Saturday afternoon read.

Pros: Story quickly gets to The Murder. Grammar, spelling, and punctuation are within acceptable limits (laudable, for a self-published novel). The total book is short, approximately 189 pages long, just right for a summer afternoon or a day at the beach.

Cons: Story line is mired in excess uninteresting detail. Authors seem compelled to account for every minute of each character's time, which is TMI! After progressing about 10% into the book, I started skimming, hoping that I would reach a point where the plot would take off and then I could slow down and enjoy reading to the end. After skimming to the 30% mark, I gave up. There may well be a good story in there somewhere (clearly other reviewers enjoyed this work), but my patience ran out before I could find it. This book would benefit greatly from a firm editor, probably turning it into a short-ish novella or long-ish short story.

Troll Alert: You notice how negative reviews are rated unhelpful and the positive reviews, no matter how vague, are rated helpful? Ah for the old days when we were able to rely upon the objective assessment of our fellow readers!
