From Booklist

Thank God his wife is a terrible shot. That is the first thought that crosses Godric St. John’s mind when he unexpectedly encounters an armed and very cranky Margaret “Megs” St. John in London’s most dangerous neighborhood. To her credit, Megs has no idea she is shooting at her husband; she is really trying to put a hole in the Ghost of Saint Giles. Two years earlier, the Ghost of Saint Giles killed Roger Fraser-Burnsby, and Megs vowed she would one day exact revenge on the man who murdered the love of her life. Of course, Megs had another reason for coming to London. After their wedding, nearly two years ago, Megs and Godric have lived separate lives, but now Megs is determined to seduce her husband into giving her the one thing she desperately wants: a baby. But what to do now that she realizes her husband is the same man she has sworn to kill? The fifth installment in Hoyt’s impeccably written, Georgian-set Maiden Lane series delivers plenty of swashbuckling thrills and wry wit, while the exquisitely crafted chemistry between Megs and Godric is pure passion. --John Charles

More About the Author

Elizabeth Hoyt is the New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestselling author of historical romance, including reader favorite, The Raven Prince. Elizabeth also writes sexy contemporary romances under the name Julia Harper.

Elizabeth was born in New Orleans but grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota. She has a BA in anthropology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Elizabeth married relatively young and produced two children who kept her busy until her mid-thirties. At about this time, when her youngest was entering Kindergarten, Elizabeth's mother hinted that perhaps Elizabeth should get a Real Job.

Sadly, Elizabeth was so delusional she thought writing a romance novel might qualify as a Real Job.

But! Five years later, to everyone's surprise, she actually sold that romance novel (The Raven Prince) and began a rather successful career as a Romance Novelist. This was most fortunate since Elizabeth is singularly unqualified to do anything else but Make Up Stories.

Since then Elizabeth has written fourteen books to critical acclaim: The Prince Trilogy (The Raven Prince, The Leopard Prince, and The Serpent Prince); the Legend of the Four Soldiers series (To Taste Temptation, To Seduce a Sinner, To Beguile a Beast, and To Desire a Devil); and the Maiden Lane series (Wicked Intentions, Notorious Pleasures, Scandalous Desires, Thief of Shadows, Lord of Darkness, Duke of Midnight, and Darling Beast.) All of Elizabeth's books are set in eighteenth century England and all feature a fairy tale story that serves as a foil to the main story.

Elizabeth lives in central Illinois with a bevy of untrained canines and a garden in constant need of weeding. Please visit her website, http://ElizabethHoyt.com, for contests, book excerpts, news, and Sidetracked Research Articles.

I have found lately, as a fan of historical romances, that it is hard to find both a hero and heroine that are both likeable. I might love the guy, but the girl will be silly or annoying. I love both Megs and Godric in this book. They each have admirable traits. I am a fan of Elizabeth Hoyt's writing and was pleased to find that Megs finds out Godric's secret relatively early and takes it in stride. I was really afraid this was going to be a drawn out plot element. I am getting a little tired of the Ghost of St. Giles, but he worked really well in this book.

I loved everything about this book! It's so hard for a series to not loose momentum, but this series is maintaining it's quality and perhaps even getting better!

Lord of Darkness is Megs and Godric's book. Margaret "Megs" Reading is Lord Griffin Reading's sister who was first introduced in Notorious Pleasures. The last book Scandalous Desires, has found Megs pregnant out of wedlock and her lover has been murdered. The epilogue shows Griffin confronting Godric about a "proposition" that he has for him. It's fairly apparent that this "proposition" has something to do with his pregnant and alone sister. This sets up a wonderful Marriage of Convenience plot that involves two hurting individuals whom are both afraid to let go of the past.

Fast forward two years. She is grief stricken and wishes to avenge her lover's murder and she also longs for a baby. Megs has come to London to seduce her husband! I love this idea, and Ms. Hoyt takes this plot to a whole new level in this incredible book.

Godric is still grieving for the loss of his Clara. Megs is still grieving for the loss of her Roger, yet she bursts into Godric's life and sheds light, laughter, and joy into his dismal and dark existence. Seeing Godric react to Megs was entertaining, and watching this stoic man fall (and fall hard) for his wife was what made this book absolutely brilliant.

There is a ton going on in this book. Maiden Lane continues to be a very dangerous place for women and children, and The Ghost of St. Giles continues to have his work cut out for him. The couple that will be featured in the next book are given just enough page time to have me yearning for release of Duke of Midnight (which will be out this December).

Sorry for the long review..... but this story had so many twists and turns, that it is not so simple to provide such a brief synopsis and review of the story. But I must say, WAY TO GO and Kudos to Elizabeth Hoyt!-- What a phenomenal book; the wait was well worth it. These characters totally jumped off the pages for me. The story was full of great action, suspense, drama and romance. It was the perfect story that covered all entertaining aspects without losing credibility. Thank you!

In the predecessor book of "Thief of Shadows", we were introduced to these two characters as our leading lady, Margaret "Megs" Reading found herself pregnant with her dead fiancés baby, only to be thrown into an arranged marriage contracted by her brother Griffin simply because he couldn't live with the inevitable scandal that was sure to come. Griffin was able to conveniently arrange this marriage for his free spirited sister Megs with the scholarly Godric St. John because he discovered that Godric is the infamous Ghost of St. Giles who wonders the streets at night setting wrongs to rights (ensuring the safety of the children of St. Giles) at night. Our esteemed author provided us with excerpts from chapter one to this upcoming book as an excellent little tease and I was anticipating this release because I couldn't even begin to guess how in the world this marriage would even succeed under such strenuous circumstances. Well, that's how brilliant of an author Ms. Elizabeth Hoyt is.

SPOILER ALERTS: This story is full of extreme and intense passion.

Awesome! As usual, Elizabeth Hoyt comes through with another hit in her Maiden Lane series. Both Godric and Margaret "Megs" St. John carry the burdens of grief over the deaths of their true loves. But, of course, this is a romance, so they both learn to love again. There are serious issues--poverty, child neglect and abuse, greed, and family stress--to keep the novel from being yet another fluffy romance. Hoyt develops her characters with sensitivity, revealing both their flaws and their essential goodness. You can't help but fall in love with both the hero and heroine and that makes for an excellent and entertaining read. In Lord of Darkness, Hoyt also further develops the characters who will figure as the main characters of the next installment, and I can't wait. The Ghost of St. Giles character (or I should say characters) is a stroke of genius and the depths and complexities added by secondary characters add a dimension to Hoyt's novels that is rare among the genre.
