I should have realized what I was getting myself into by the almost naked man on the cover of Lord of the Deep. What I found inside was a sexual odyssey I could have never foreseen. I honestly will never view seals and trees the same way ever again due to their sexual interactions with the heroine.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fantasy that will set the Sea to Steaming!, October 25, 2007
This review is from: Lord of the Deep (Elementals, Book 1) (Paperback)
Accused of being a witch, Meg had been banished from the Arcan Mainland and had been given into the care of her Aunt Adelia and her Uncle Olwyn on the Isle of the Mists. Meg's fate is to become a priestess, a fate which she rails against in her heart of hearts, for after her initiation rites she must remain celibate for life.

Late one night Meg witnesses a Selkie mating. Caught up in their ecstasy she catches the eye of their leader, the Lord of the Deep. As he makes love to one of his consorts she imagines herself in the selkie female's place. Knowing of her heart's desire in the way of his people Simeon comes to her, to grant her fondest wish.

A virgin no longer, Meg cannot become a priestess nor can she return to the Mainland. She cannot remain with Simeon in the deep indefinitely either. Simeon's consorts are a jealous lot and Meg cannot breathe under water for long. Nor can Simeon exist long in her world. Simeon has a plan but needs time to execute it. Meg returns to her relative's cottage with plans to meet with him later at the witching hour. But Meg's avaricious aunt has other plans for her.

Unknown to Meg there are accommodations that can be made for nubile young women who no longer qualify to become priestesses. It is a carefully guarded secret that the Shamans of the temple also keep a whorehouse on Shaman's Mount, for none who had ventured there had ever returned. But Adelia knows and acquires a tidy sum from the Shaman Seth for her troublesome niece. Using Simeon's hastily discarded seal skin to gain Meg's cooperation, Meg soon finds herself on the Mount and Simeon will move Heaven and Sea to get her back.

Even if he is successful their dilemma would not be resolved for he is immortal and she is doomed to age and die. Of course with love all things are possible and with the aid and hindrance of many fanciful creatures, including the Lord of the Forest, a long lived nun, a vengeful sea witch, a mercurial water horse, an ancient spirit trapped in a stolen tree and a swordfish sentinel the pair may just have a chance to live happily ever after. If you love ancient sea lore as I do and enjoy a hot steamy romance as well, Lord of the Deep is a book you will want to add to your keeper shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mystical, Magic, Drama and Hot Sex Underwater!, September 1, 2007
This review is from: Lord of the Deep (Elementals, Book 1) (Paperback)
Whew! Did the cover of this book lure you in like a fish in a net? Hope so! This story keeps going with myth, drama, love and hot sex all underwater! Ms. Thompson does an excellent job of keeping the reader engrossed while delivering an engaging story. Meg and Simon are made for each other - no matter whom or what gets in the way! Simon reminds me of King Neptune - a fun story that will make you go to the beach and cry your wishes in to the water in the hopes of what is on the cover and in the story to appear before you! I am off to the beach!
PS - I am searching for a HINT of WHEN Book 2 will be released (I Think I know WHOM it will be about!)....Sigh! - I'm still searching!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lord of the Deep, November 19, 2007
This review is from: Lord of the Deep (Elementals, Book 1) (Paperback)
Accused of being a witch, Meg has been banished to the Isle of Mists,
where she will be trained as a priestess. Meg is not happy about her
fate, and one night, while she is looking out the window, she spots
the selkies taking part in an orgy. Their leader catches her eye, and
as she watches him take his consort, she wishes it was her, and she
pleasures herself.

Simeon, the Lord of the Deep, sees Meg in her window, giving herself
pleasure as he takes his consort. He knows he must have her and when
he does, he knows he can never let her go.

But Meg is mortal and Simeon is not. Together they face a myriad of
dangers, including the Waterwitch and the mortal priests of the Isle
of Mists, to find a way to be together, forever.

Lord of the Deep is a lush, sensual book that pulls the reader into
its depths and keeps them warm and happy for many hours. Ms. Thompson
enchanted me with her new world, and I fell in love not only with the
characters, but with the setting. I was entranced by the many
challenges Meg and Simeon faced and the way they came through them
with their love intact.

The secondary characters were also fascinating. I was happy to see
this is the first book in a series and I anxiously await the second
book next spring. Readers who enjoy tales selkies and magic and who
are enthralled by the water will love Lord of the Deep.

5.0 out of 5 stars One sexy selkie!, October 7, 2007
This review is from: Lord of the Deep (Elementals, Book 1) (Paperback)
Good lord!! I love this book, and I can't wait for the second one, Lord of the Dark.

Simeon is a Selkie, who is also the Lord of the Deep. Meg has been banished from the Isle of Mists for supposedly being a witch.

One night, Meg sees seals turn into humans in the surf and there she sees Simeon for the first time, who is showing Meg his sexual prowess with his consorts. When the cavorting humans disappear, Meg walks down to the beach, and Simeon comes riding after her, captures her, then takes them back down into the water. The love story begins and keeps you hooked until the end.

I almost didn't finish the story because there were a few instances where I thought the main characters were going to end up screwing other people, and I really do NOT like that in a romance if it isn't ménage or bondage based. I had a really hard time getting past the arousal and orgasms of Meg and Simeon with their captors. (Well, Simeon did a handjob once he was free, so I guess it's different, but Meg got off with three women rubbing her with oil.)

****WARNING****
If you aren't prepared for more open-minded couplings, don't read this book. Meg does have sex with a tree, and she gets off having seaweed inside of her, and Vega climaxes inside a sea plant.

1.0 out of 5 stars Watch Out For Those Trees! (D- Grade), September 15, 2007
This review is from: Lord of the Deep (Elementals, Book 1) (Paperback)
I should have realized what I was getting myself into by the almost naked man on the cover of Lord of the Deep. What I found inside was a sexual odyssey I could have never foreseen. I honestly will never view seals and trees the same way ever again due to their sexual interactions with the heroine.

Meg is a simple girl who lives with her aunt and uncle on the Isle of Mists in an alternate universe called Arcus. Meg is also quite the voyeur and one night she looks out from her bedroom window as the selkies come out of the ocean and shed their skins to become sexually insatiable human males and females. As she watches, she is in awe of their sexual antics, especially that of their leader, who has excellent mating skills. Meg is incredibly turned on and ventures down to the shoreline after the orgy has finished and they return to their watery underworld. But as the virginal Meg cools off in the sea, Simeon, the Lord of the Deep, grabs Meg and takes her down to his kingdom. For the next few hours he and Meg have fun on a sea sponge.

Meg is overcome by Simeon's sexual skills and even though Simeon has had thousands of both human and selkie women alike, he is close to falling in love with Meg because he was able to taste her "sweet nectar" and she is not like the others, or so Simeon says. But since Meg cannot live underwater, he must decide if he will live above ground as a mortal or find a way for Meg to live with him even though she could die by drowning or be killed by his jealous selkie handmaidens.

The two lovers are separated when Meg's Aunt Adelia finds her rolling naked in the surf and assumes she has given away her virginity. Now Meg is ruined and cannot become a high priestess, instead becoming a sexual plaything for the shamans who live high on the mountain. Even as Meg is taken there and "readied" by the other shamans' handmaidens, Simeon tries to save her and find a way for them to be together.

Meg is able to escape from one Shaman who walks around with everything hanging out and becomes excited by the thrill of the chase. But Meg has friends watching out for her, including the mountain's enchanted trees. And this is where the story goes past the point of no return: Meg is forced by a tree to have sex with it. Yes, a tree. Meg becomes friendly with even more trees as the roots and branches manipulate Meg's body through their own parodies of sex.

Sex with a tree. That one scene, a quarter into the novel, was unlike anything I have ever read. In addition to this over the top scene, Meg is being constantly chased, abused, and forced to have sex with everyone and everything. She really has no say, even with the hero, but she doesn't mind being dominated by him because, well...he is the hero. And when Meg is captured to be used by the shamans, their women use their own talented ways to prepare her for them.

Every other page is sex, or the thought of sex, or a character's body part hanging out. Everyone runs around naked and aroused and stops what they're doing when the need to have sex hits, at which point they engage in some sort of sexual act to give them release. I find myself at a loss for words about this story of Meg and her fun seals and plants. For some readers, Meg's "friendship" with a tree may excite, but I found myself disturbed by the whole notion.

Simeon and Meg's relationship is somewhat better. Simeon does become monogamous the moment he realizes Meg is the one for him, so he is at least redeemed in that sense. When the story focuses on these two lovers, I found their interactions fairly erotic, if a bit purple. But yet again, their relationship is more of a sexual (and messy) one than an emotional one.

Lord of the Deep is full of improbable characters in an improbable world performing improbable acts. There is even a character by the name of Gideon who transforms into a bird, only to become aroused when Meg mistakenly touches his wings. Perhaps that's the best metaphor for my reaction to this book: It's for the birds.

5.0 out of 5 stars fabulous erotic paranormal romance, September 3, 2007
This review is from: Lord of the Deep (Elementals, Book 1) (Paperback)
Shamans, her Aunt Adelia and her Uncle Olwyn, are mentoring their niece Meg in the Witching Ways on the Iles of Mists in the Principalities of Arcus. Lonely she sees seals playing in the nearby water, but in the blink of an eye, they vanish and men are frolicking instead. She wonders if they are the legendary Selkie when one of them, the seeming leader of the group, claims she called him. Simeon insists he, as the Lord of the Deep, will answer her magical calling.

He continues to see her although both their species would disown them for forging a taboo relationship. Simeon knows he has done broken the first commandment of his people by falling in love with a land dweller. Meanwhile Meg reciprocates, but knows the impossibility of their being together as he is a sea creature. However, love as the strongest magic of all is the only possible way that a sea immortal and land mortal can become one.

LORD OF THE DEEP is a fabulous erotic paranormal romance that fans of Dawn Thompson will enjoy. The underwater sea sex scenes seem believable as Simeon and Meg fall in love. Although greater emphasis on their species differences is lacking in the overall fine story line, readers will enjoy this under the sea romantic fantasy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, August 28, 2008
This review is from: Lord of the Deep (Elementals, Book 1) (Paperback)
From the descriptions and reviews (at the time I purchased the book), I thought it was a paranormal romance novel. It read like cheesy porn!!! The dialogue was terrible, the plot was weak, the heroine was incredibly idiotic (I wanted to wring her neck!), the hero is said to be desirable (but not shown to be so), and everything ties up waaay too neatly in the end. I started flipping through pages instead of really reading after the first chapter . . . then, halfway through, I just flipped to the end to read the conclusion because I couldn't take it anymore. The product description is misleading. Should've suspected from the cover.
