MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW,
This review is from: Lord of the Deep (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a great read! I would have never thought I could get caught up in the excitement of "landing the big one!" In this young adult book by Graham Salisbury, that is exactly what happened. Graham's description of events drew me into the drama of the moment, and I could almost feel thesalt air misting on me. Excellent! Lord Of The Deep is a great action and adventure story, but it is more than that as well. Mikey is growing up and on an outing with his father Bill, who charters his fishing boat, Mikey tastes young love ,stirring new emotions and feelings inside of him. Already struggling with new feelings, Bill makes a decision that goes against the rules after the catch of a 'big ' one, Mikey does not approve of Bill's decision and is troubled over it. He learns not all things in life are black and white. Not all decisions are made on what is correct. Perhaps some readers will feel that this story should have had a different ending then the one it did. However, I believe the author wanted to show that what we feel are right decisions are not always made by the ones that we think the highest of. Growing up is not easy and pretending that adults will always practice what they preach is often a fairy-tale, as hard as we might try; decisions may be based on reasons unknown to others. Right or wrong! I liked Lord of The Deep. It was a fast pace, quick read. Kept my attention from beginning to end,and that is what a good book is all about! I recommend it. Shirley Johnson/Reviewer

A Great Platform for Discussion,
By A Customer
This review is from: Lord of the Deep (Paperback)
With his novel Lord of the Deep, Graham Salisbury proves his familiarity with and respect for the territory roamed by the young heart. That he respects his readers is evident. He gives them a complex situation and leads them through it carefully, showing a deep understanding of what it is to be nearly grown, what it is to be clear sighted and honest and yet feel powerless to influence the outside world or the actions of others. In Lord of the Deep, a boy must try to make sense of a situation he knows to be morally ambiguous. His step-father, to whom he is very close, is a sportsfisherman. The father and son spend their days together, the son working for the father as a deckhand. When the father makes an unethical deal with two loutish wealthy customers, the boy begins his own separate ethical life with a passionate act that will ring true with its young readers. All of this takes place in the warm Hawaiian world Salisbury has established for his readers, a world in which they can feel safe as they face the challenges of the imperfect larger world in which we live. The summer romance between the boy and the intelligent daughter of one of the men who charter his father's boat is a charming harmony which tempers this serious book.

Lord of the Deep Review by: Miranda,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Lord of the Deep (Mass Market Paperback)
A 13 year old boy named Mikey went fishing with his stepfather, Bill, two men named Cal and Ernie, and Cal's daughter, Alison. Later in the story, they caught a big fish. They all thought that this big fish was a record. Once they checked what the record was, they noticed that they're fish weighed in more then the record! Then Bill found out that they couldn't report it in because they broke one of the rules of having an official world record. Suddenly Ernie and Cal had an idea. They wouldn't tell the press that they broke one of the rules. They would lie about it. My favorite part is when Bill decides to either go along with Cal and Ernie's plan or not turn it in at all. I liked this book because it was exciting and there were many intresting parts. I recommend this book for people that like fishing.

The Big Catch,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Lord of the Deep (Mass Market Paperback)
Mikey is a boy that has very strong beliefs and has to work already at the age of thirteen. He has a dad, and he works on the charter boat too. They set out on a big charter weekend and catch a monster fish that will go down in the record books. But there is a problem. This fish can't go down in the record books if one of the skippers hooks it, and Mikey hooked it. But Cal somehow bribed Bill to say that he caught it. As the fish went down in the records Mikey became mad.
As a thirteen year old I liked this book. It is exciting and always kept me on the edge of my seat. If you like these kinds of books this is the one for you!! This book is written as a love, action, sad story and it is a book for everyone.

LORD OF THE DEEP,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Lord of the Deep (Mass Market Paperback)
The author name was Graham Salisbury .This is it, the big time. Mickey is thirteen, a deckhand working on a charter boat in Hawaii. Working for the best skipper anywhere. The reason I chose this book was because it was a young reader book, it seemed interesting to me. Which I do recommended this book. I think little the age of 12-14 would like this book the type of adventurer, most boys and girls would like this book.
The best thing about this book was the characters they bought something different to the book. The only thing is that they main character, which was Mickey he didn't have a lot of quotes. He only had like 25 quotes, "I can't hold the rail take it dad "said dad. He also should have had Mickey kiss Ail. As the book went on they both started having felling for each other. "Good bye said Mickey" said Ail. What I didn't like about the book was that they had a dead whale in it; they could have left that out. The worst part about it was I read it at dinner. "What is that smell" said Mickey "It's a dead whale "said Cal. I liked the book over all because the book had a lot of details in it and I was very interested in the book. The reason I choose this book was because I was drown to the book. I would recommend this book to my cousin T and my dad because they like books like this.

An okay book with disappointing ending,
By Kaila Searl "a girl who likes military history" (Eugene, OR United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Lord of the Deep (Paperback)
For the most part, the story line of the book carries the reader along. There are parts when the fishing gets really exciting. However, I hate it when authors talk about boredom. When they write that their character is bored, I get bored reading it, and that's not fun. I thought the display of Mikey's trust and love towards his step father was touching, but I guess I felt betrayed at how the ending played out. I know that it's impossible to ask for perfect hero action out of Bill, and that's fine that he wasn't a hero, but the scene where Mikey confronts Bill is so unbelievable, it makes the entire book seem unbelievable. I put it down thinking I had wasted my time on a story that was pulling the wool over my eyes, and that doesn't make me feel good about myself. Rather disappointing.

Page turner that stays with you,

This review is from: Lord of the Deep (Mass Market Paperback)
This story is full of the action and the details of deep sea fishing. Mikey greatly admires his step-father, Bill. He is proud of the confidence and trust that he has earned with his hard work for Bill's charter fishing boat business. When Bill offers to adopt Mikey, we feel the boy's happiness. He does not like their new charter customers though and Mikey's peace of mind is crushed when Bill makes a decision in favor his family over ethics.
The ending of the novel does come as a jolt but the more I have thought about it, the more it speaks to me. Young people view the world as very concrete, and it is difficult to come to terms with the hard choices adults must make. It is painful to understand the failings of people we love. What Mikey decides at the end of the story would make for a terrific discussion with young people who are just beginning to make personal decisions about their lives. A fifth grade student told me recently that this book was his favorite Texas Bluebonnet book so far this year.

This is the best book any one can read because it is filled with adventure and when you read this book, it really feels like you are in the ocean fighting and trying to pull up all the fish. This has got to be the best book i have ever read in my life. This is not only about fishing, it is about what a 13 year old boy is going through.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Lord of the Deep (Mass Market Paperback)
The story 'Lord of the Deep' is a story about a thirteen year old deckhand working on a charter boat in Hawaii working for his stepdad Bill. If you are someone who likes fishing you would love this book. The reason Mikey is a deckhand at such a young age is that his stepdad trusts him. I have had similar times fighting a big fish like Mikey.

Lord of the Deep
By: Tyler Lord of the Deep is about a kid named Mikey with his family and friends on a vacation. On a boat called the Crystal-C. They run into a lot of problems like storms, and fighting fish. Mikey gets a hook stuck in his arm and had to bandage it up. So they have the Mahimahi and it is a new world record fish but it is not offical because only one person can handle the fish since Cal striked for Ernie they can't call it in or they would be disqaulified. They went to the peir and saw two flags fluttered with orange and white for ono and yellow and blue for mahi- mahi. This is a great book for anyone who likes the ocean and ships. I really enjoyed this book because I like the ocean. |
