The Lord Dog Bird... what a name. I wonder if there is any intricate meaning or if singer/songwriter, Colin McCann, tried his best to find a band name that wasn't copyrighted yet? Contrary to his choice of silly artist name, The Lord Dog Bird's music is nothing less of stark, contrasting, very melodic and very reverberated folk. It's gorgeous stuff and not all dissimilar to Bon Iver's release earlier this year.

I think TLDB's greatest success with this album is it's cohesiveness. All the songs fit together to show a bigger picture. Some songs feature effects and ideas unique in each song and some effects and ideas that expand multiple songs. Some songs progress ("Song For Woodthrush"), some songs possess basic structure ("No Security"). There's even instrumentals that work well as such ("Back To Drink Water"). And there's one heck of an ending ("The Gift Of Song In The Lion's Den").

Most listeners should initially be aware that the reverb on this album is turned way up. The sound quality sounds like a beginners home recordings. But that's what The Lord Dog Bird was going for and it's very successful and works to appease listeners. If you enjoyed Bon Iver's excellent debut earlier this year than there's a good chance this music might be your flavor as well.

What a great album. As a fan of Colin McCann's music in his band The Wilderness, I thought I would give this album a try too, and am glad I did. Although I do miss the bass and percussion of the Wilderness, melodically there is quite a bit going on here to keep you interested. I agree with the other reviewer here- this is really just fine, traditional folk music with a drum machine now and then. It reminds me of the Lungfish side-project called the Pupils, although much more progressive.
