Review

Beautifully illustrated Riveting Reads SLA It would be no exaggeration to hold up this book as an outstanding example of the art of the picture book in which the combined qualities of text, illustration, typography and book design are brought together in an almost perfect combination. Morris' watercolours alone should earn it a place in any school library. School Librarian Best animal picture book of the season ... holds the reader in suspense until the very last page. Economist Both the writing and the illustrations in this book are magnificent complementing eachother and giving a vivid picture of life in the jungle, while representing changes of mood and pace. 5-7 Educator --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars art for children (and adults), April 9, 2010

This review is from: Lord of the Forest (Paperback)
Lord of the Forest is rapturously beautiful and a joy to read to my daughter. The story marches poetically towards its inevitable but delightful conclusion all set among some of the most inspired watercolors ever devoted to a children's book. The subject matter is crucial right now - there only some 4,000 tigers left in the wild and numbers are declining rapidly. Appreciation for wildlife, particularly this wildlife, is another gift from this wonderful book. Lord of the Forest belongs on every child's bookshelf.

When you're not sure whether you're looking at an art book or a children's book ... you're looking at a children's book illustrated by Jackie Morris. In this volume, the story is okay, but the compelling watercolor illustrations are memorable, even haunting.
