More About the Author

Education: B.A. and M.A. in Honours Philosophy, University of Western Ontario (Assumption College); Master's and Doctor's Degree in Medieval Studies, the University of Notre Dame.

I am professor emeritus of Liturgy and Church History at the University of Notre, Notre Dame, IN 46556 (1967-1988). I was formerly professor of history, chair of the department of history, and adjunct professor of theology at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA (1955-1967).

My special interest is the history of the Roman Liturgy, of popular Catholic piety and devotion, and in the publication of modern prayer books reflecting that interest. I have published some 25 books in this area and am part of a second-had book shop in South Bend, IN: liturgy, philosphy, theology, American literature and a wide range of history.

I was married for 27 years (my wife is deceased) and have 7 children, two of whom are deceased.

I found this book looking for a personal way to participate in the Roman Catholic Liturgy begun with attendance of the Sunday's Eucharist. It is a condensed easily accessed Office similarily patterned to that found in "The Book of Common Praayer" though identified as being in the Catholic tradition.
It's Office is organized around a seven day calendar, including both morning and evening prayer and a common night prayer, with additions for special times of the church year, ie. Advent, Easter, Lent, Pentecost. This Office is ordered in such a way that it could easily be used in a communal setting. Also it contains prayers for times of special need from authors such as Thomas Merton and Lucien Deiss.
This is not a how-to-book but fills the need for those of us who are looking for a companion along the journey of private prayer.

If I were ever stranded on a deserted island, I would want to have this book with me. There are specific prayers for specific ocassions, daily prayers, an abbreviated Liturgy of the Hours, a Scriptual roasary, contemplative prayer and how to "contemplate" and more. I would like to have one in a leather cover with ribbons and guilded edges. That's how strongly I fell that this book is a treasure to be embraced.

Over 30 years ago I bought the original edition (with a vinyl cover). It has been with me ever since. I cannot express the riches to found therein.

My original is sadly worn, and I have now purchased two of the paperback edition as backups. The quality of the binding is excellent and the covers, while paperback, are very thick and seem pretty durable. These are not your usual mass market paperback quality.

All of the first three reviewers are quite correct. I would add that they tend to under-estimate the general prayer sections. There are specific sections for: the traditional prayers (Our Father, Apostle's Creed, etc.), prayers for daily life, prayers for the journey, prayers for the aged, prayers for the sick, prayers for the dieing, prayers for the (Catholic Church), prayers for the Christian Church, prayers for faith and strength, prayers for the family, night prayers, morning prayers and more besides.

It will be of great value to Anglicans, Episcopalians, and Catholics and probably the Orthodox. It will also enrich anyone who wishes a wider view of the prayers of Christianity. Some of these prayers go back to the church fathers, circa 200 A.D.

Delivery of the book happened before I had a chance to start looking for it to arrive! The only disappointment was that the original edition of the book had a vinyl cover; this is paperback. However, the description did indicate it was a paperback book. The book itself is an excellent prayer book that can be used for daily prayer and meditation as well as other devotions.
