5.0 out of 5 stars A Glorious Read, September 25, 2008
This review is from: Lord, Help! Here Comes Mom! (Paperback)
From its title, some readers may think this book is simply a loving tribute written by a middle-aged daughter about her elderly mother. It is. Some might consider the title and think this book contains humor and hilarity. It does. Beyond these elements, this book explores and recounts events found within the circle of life--giving the gift of a rich, poignant and, at times, lighthearted telling of the six-week journey that a single-parent family with three teenagers experiences on the modern-day plains of Kansas.

Every reader can imagine receiving one phone call that will change his/her life forever. It's part of the life journey, especially as the generations age and the "child" eventually becomes the "parent." What makes this read so different, so very special, is the love, wisdom, and pathos of each character that transcend the pages, and the reader is left to relive personal, family memories, ponder life's greatest truths, and confront the question of eternity. Some might think twice about these truths. In fact, tears may be shed; hearts and consciences may be pricked.

Some will even consider this book glorious. It is. Certainly, glory will be encountered in its pages. I highly recommend reading this book--and reading it more than once as I have done. Do it quickly before the overwhelming urge comes to loan your copy of this book to a parent, child, sibling, loved one, friend, or co-worker. Better even to buy multiple copies as gifts as I have done. Every child who loves a parent and every parent who loves a child should read this book. It serves as a loving primer for how to "honor thy father and mother." It nourishes the heart and the soul--and it may just leave you changed in ways you could not have imagined.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lord Help! Here Comes Mom! by Terrie Johnson, March 22, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Lord, Help! Here Comes Mom! (Paperback)
I was excited to get to read something that was written by some one I know. She wrote 'Lord Help! Here comes Mom!' about her mom and the last few months she had with her, with a few memories thrown in for good measure. I had met her mother and enjoyed her Kentucky accent, wisdom and her personality. So to get to read about someone else I knew was another plus! The book made me laugh, cry and thank God for such a wonderful description of life as the daughter of a mom who is transplanted form the home she knew so well, the friends she would not see again (on earth, anyway) and her subsequent story of how her children, while she worked, stepped up to the plate and helping to take care of her mother, their 'granny'. Getting to know her better, sharing deep belly laughs, good food, sharing her with their friends. It made me feel a little guilty because I am only fifteen minutes away from my folks and I tend to be 'too busy' for them, as they are getting to that stage in their lives where they need more constant looking after. The book is well written, well thought out and I recommend it, especially for those of us who have elderly parents or who have lost their parents or parent. I can't wait for the next book! Thank you, Terrie! Keep on writing! You have the gift!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read., March 4, 2010
By
This review is from: Lord, Help! Here Comes Mom! (Paperback)
I just finished reading, Lord, Help! Here Comes Mom! written by a good friend of mine from Church. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Terrie's family. Each page is so full of emotion. The love that Terrie and her children have for her Mother, poured out in bucketfuls as I turned each page. It was like I was there helping move Mom to Kansas, being with them when they went to eat or out to sneak ice cream. Terrie is so good at giving all the details of their short time together while caring for her Mom. God had a plan as it all unfolded as I read and in the end my heart broke right along with her when their time together ended. This book is a must read for anyone. There is humor, trials, and lessons of love. Most of all faith and the promise of God. It is an excellent read.

This review is from: Lord, Help! Here Comes Mom! (Paperback)
Terrie Dennard Johnson is the best story telling writer. This is one of the best books I have read in a very long time. I received the book on Saturday and could not put it down, I finished it in less than 24 hours. This is an amazing story of love.
I laughed & I cried. I have always believed in God's mysterious plans for our lives and this book is a great example of how he changes peoples lives for his glory. This is a must read.

You will not be disappointed when you purchase this book.

Way to go Terrie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lord, Help! I can't stop laughing!, December 10, 2008
By
This review is from: Lord, Help! Here Comes Mom! (Paperback)
Ms. Johnson's debut novel doesn't just have the ring of truth -- it has the roar of truth! The author's fears and weaknesses, love and joy were all laid bare, and in a language that is brilliant in its cadence and simplicity. I wasn't just having a conversation with the author as I read this book, but one with myself. And that's because this story is about being an ordinary human in inordinately complicated world ... a world where gender roles, family dynamics and society are constantly changing as we go along.

Terrie Johnson hit one out of the ballpark with this book. It is fun, and heartwarming. It is sad and happy. It is totally from the heart. Terrie's love for her entire family are summed up in this easy to read book. I am not a huge book reader - but found this book a true blessing to read - and it only took me a day and a half. This will make an excellent Christmas gift for those that are hard to buy for. I would read this book again and again.

Excellent book, especially for those who are in the process of caring for a parent or who may some day be in that situation. The author shares her heart and opens her life up to her readers. Caring for a parent, though challenging, can provide some of the best moments and memories for a family. This book helps to remind us of that truth.
