5.0 out of 5 stars Well On The Road To Happier Life, October 8, 2009
By
This review is from: Lord, I Just Want to Be Happy (Paperback)
I have just finished reading "Lord I Just Want To Be Happy" and have to say that this is well worth the read! Not only worth reading but also putting the skills Leslie Vernick teaches, into ACTION! She guides and encourages us to take the necessary steps in learning how to live a happier life in Christ, by helping us to understand our unhappiness, showing us how to move beyond our unhappiness, and then taking all we've learned and practicing it in order to lead happier lives.

She uses practicle biblical applications and examples in developing these skills and focuses on the fact that true happiness is only found in living our lives for Christ. Though most Christians already know this fact the issue often is how to carry it out, especially in the midst of our hurried, chaotic, and broken lives.

Lord I Just Want To Be Happy is a life changing book for anyone wanting to live a happier life. It helps us to examine our lives in light of God's word and gives a formula for lasting change.

At the end of each chapter are life application questions for thought and discussion, making this book an excellent tool for personal growth or group study.

I highly, highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Happiness God's way, October 29, 2009
By
This review is from: Lord, I Just Want to Be Happy (Paperback)
By the second page of the first chapter my yellow highlighter was busy. As a personal growth book it is the one I will reread and buy more to pass on to many people that are looking for answers to true happiness. Leslie tells us how to live on purpose and not merely exist by giving us tools to fall more deeply in love with Jesus. You learn how to appreciate your life more, practice good self talk, use self discipline, not have unrealistic expectations and many more healthy life practices. Leslie points us away from what the world tries to tell us that will make us happy to the truth that happiness isn't in sinful pleasures but truthful thinking, right relationships, right choices and right living. Because we cannot correct something we cannot see this book will open your eyes to the life Jesus wants you to have and will encourage you to let Jesus transform you. Lord, I Just Want to be Happy should not be the last book you read by Leslie.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Happy Read With Happy Results, October 28, 2009
This review is from: Lord, I Just Want to Be Happy (Paperback)

The only unhappy part of reading this book was closing the cover on the final page. Flowing with the ease of a conversation with a wise, trusted friend, each chapter is filled with poignant illustrations, practical help and penetrating principles from scripture that encourage and guide the reader into a richer relationship with Jesus. Having read some of Leslie's other books, I expected to learn important truths about myself, my choices and God. What I never expected was learning how to make lemonade while controlling an elephant or the happy changes that result from putting that knowledge into practice. Read this book - you'll be happy you did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lord, I Just Want To Be Happy, October 26, 2009
This review is from: Lord, I Just Want to Be Happy (Paperback)
What a great book! I love the way Leslie writes as she is very down to earth and easy to understand. This can be a life changing book if we put into action all that Leslie has made clear to us. I'm a highlighter of things I want to remember and what I feel is important, and just about this whole book is highlighted!
I am recommending this book to all of my friends and to the women at my church for a study group.
It's time for us to be Happy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, October 25, 2009
This review is from: Lord, I Just Want to Be Happy (Paperback)
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've just finished reading this book. When I enjoy a book, I'm typically one to read it straight through. This is a book that you really need to pause and consider at the end of each chapter. The application questions are so helpful!

Ms. Vernick understands hurting people and does an excellent job of tying together Biblical principles with put-it-into-action skills.

This is an excellent resource for a pastor or clinician, but also for friends or family..anyone who is ready to be HAPPY!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Read!, October 23, 2009
This review is from: Lord, I Just Want to Be Happy (Paperback)
When I first saw the title, I was concerned that this book might lean toward a person-centered approach and be weak on Biblical truth. I was pleasantly surprised. Leslie Vernick has written an insightful and practical book on understanding and dealing with unhappiness. This book seems to address the folks who do not suffer from severe clinical depression but who do struggle to be happy with their everyday lives. The author does a great job of supporting and challenging the reader at the same time. There are so many wonderful quotes and gems of wisdom in the book. The end of chapter discussion questions help the reader delve into scripture to promote self-evaluation and transformation through the Spirit!

4.0 out of 5 stars Re-orienting your perspective, November 5, 2009
By
markb@upland (Upland, IN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lord, I Just Want to Be Happy (Paperback)
Lord, I Just Want to be Happy effectively defines and addresses the core issues of unhappiness. Leslie Vernick first accurately diagnoses why we are so often chronically unhappy, prescribes the effective longterm treatment for our unhappiness, and forges a plan for "practicing happiness." I found this a very "hands-on" book complete with countless real life examples of individuals struggling to find pleasure and contentment in their daily lives. The problem was not their lives, it was their self-created expectations for their lives. Verner reminds us that even in the most severe, difficult or tragic situation there is one thing that can always remain in our control ... our attitude.
As a licensed social worker and private counselor in a Philadelphia surburb, Vernick draws many experiences and examples from women she counsels. While everyone will discover truths about themselves through this book, it will likely have its greatest appeal among women, especially suburban upper middle class women as they will most easily identify with many of the illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Must Read", October 21, 2009
This review is from: Lord, I Just Want to Be Happy (Paperback)
I never cease to be amazed at how Leslie tackles such hard subjects with a sensitivity that few possess. I have read many of her books, and each one I read surpasses the one before it. Leslie has a way of walking alongside the common individual with uncommon perception of what is going on it our thoughts, feelings, attitudes and sin. She uses her life experiences to illustrate godly principles and coaxes you into applying what she has learned to your own experience. I find myself saying "yes, yes, yes" to what Leslie describes and "yes, yes, yes" to the very practical methods she outlines for helping us to help ourselves. I have recommended this book to many others and have given it as homework to some of the folks I counsel. If you get this book, don't leave it on the shelf! Read it and do the questions at the end of each chapter, and guaranteed, you will be helped!
