5.0 out of 5 stars Very Satisfying
As the first LOTR game for DS, this game is pretty great. It is basically Star Wars Battlefront, Lord of the Rings style. You capture command points, you meet objectives, and you can choose to be one of three jobs every time you respawn, which include mage, warrior, and archer. Also, when you get to certain places of the level, you can play as heroes, Ents, and Trolls...

3.0 out of 5 stars A Little Disappointed
For me, this game was a little disappointing. I do agree with other reviews that the characters you can play as are awesome and the techniques they use to kill your opponent are rather interesting. Some of the techniques are not self explanatory so I wasn't sure what they were, especially with the Wringraiths, Sauron, and a few others.

Also, when you get to certain places of the level, you can play as heroes, Ents, and Trolls. After you have beaten the game, it is VERY satisfying to send some orcs or free people flying, and seeing how many people you can kill. To keep the fun going, you can get medals and awards for doing certain things, like killing a certain amount of people or killing enough giants. I would recommend this game for those who enjoy Lord of the Rings, or who liked Star Wars Battlefront.

The battles were pretty accurate and I liked how they tied in clips of each battle before you actually had to fight. However, it was annoying to only play the interesting characters for a short duration during a battle. Most of the famous movie characters are unlocked near the end of battles or with only one or two tasks left to complete.

Another issue was how most of the badges that can be unlocked involve playing the game with someone else. I wish I would have known that before purchasing the game considering I don't have any other friends who own the game, yet alone really have a DS to even be able to play the game. To me this was just a way for Nintendo to try and make more money.

Overall, the game wasn't that bad. The characters were still interesting and the battles were accurate, but the game wasn't that challenging in my opinion. I wish there was more to it than just battles, possibly getting to pick which character you play as and then procede with a battle.

This is a good adaptation of one of the greatest epics of all time, in my opinion. If you loved the book or the movie, this is a nice role playing game. The game allows for quick play or a campaign, and you can play either side (good or evil). The 3 main heroes are a wizard, archer or warrior. The campaign can be played as either for good or evil. Mini-missions have to be achieved in each major battle. You decide upon your mission by choosing a major battle. In the mini-missions, you have to be precise on the target or you will lose in defeat. You earn various badges and medals for milestones, such as the number of kills.

As you complete certain stages, you get to assume the role of many of the characters from the book/movie - like Gimli, Gandalph, Aragorn, Legolas or the Ents, for example. Unfortunately, the special characters are not always available - only specific situations in the game. The game allows you to control your character with the stylus/touchpad or use the buttons. Depending upon the character, I find it easier to use one mode of control over another. I find walking from one 'station' to the next to be faster with the stylus. Control can be sort of quirky if your opponents are in the diagonal position, when using the keypad - hence the advantage of the stylus; but special moves are easier for me with the button play.

Graphics are pretty good for the DS system, also I noticed some slowdown despite playing this on a Nintendo DSi when there are a bunch of characters on the screen at once. Sound effects, musical score and movie clips add to the ambiance of the game and make this enjoyable.

Given the theme of battles, I would recommend this game to someone over the age of 10 but you have to determine the maturity level of your young player, yourself.

Overall, this is a good game which can be rather addictive.

PROS
Graphics
Musical score
Sound effects
Movie clips

CONS
Occasional slowdown if multiple characters are on the screen (even on the DSi)

VERDICT

If you are a Lord of The Rings fan, this is a must have.

2 thumbs up.

5.0 out of 5 stars lord of the rings battlefront, January 30, 2009

If you took star wars battlefront ,and added lord of the rings this what you would get . The sound is great , but the graphics leave a little to be desired . the locations are fairly good . One of the things that I like is clips from the films . There are 3 different main unit classes , and several sub classes including ents and more .there are many heroes in this game . In conclusion if you liked star wars battlefront , you should like this game , if not I think it would hold your interest for awhile .

Well, other reviewers say it's like Star Wars Battle Front, a game I've never played, so I don't know about that. But the game has great mechanics and great characters, that it only has six maps is a downside, though. The last five of them are quite large and interesting, but the first is kinda small. The graphics are good, but come on people, this is the DS; its not known for heavy graphic quality. GREAT music, straight from the movie. (it loops a bit much, though). There are "heros" (Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, Eowyn, Theoden, etc.) Ents, Cave Trolls, Orcs, Uruk-hi, and all sorts of Free Peoples to play as, including men of Rohan and Gondor. The basic characters come in three different types: mage, archer, and warrior. (my fave is the archer.) GREAT story line, just about right from the books. The characters have all sorts of different moves to use to take out enemies, which makes it great fun. A tad short, but it is almost made for replay, what with "Conquest" mode (I think its just as good as the campaign) and multi-player. Granted I haven't found a person to play it with yet, but taking over your friend's city would be awesome! Oh, and they used movie scenes to introduce the campaign levels (they're pixilated, probably because of memory constraints, but not too bad) and this makes the levels flow in with the story nicely.

Over all, GREAT game.........I'd buy it if I were you!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Kids Review, February 13, 2009

Since this is the first LOTR game for the DS it does have some things that need fixing. The over all game is fantastic! If you're one of those people that are obsessed with graphics then this game might not be for you. However, if you consider how much the DS is doing already, and that the DS isn't the most powerful system out there, the graphics are pretty good. They should add more maps if Pandemic and them make a second one, because there aren't that many. The controls are quite easy to learn and fun to use! Who hasn't wanted to send Orcs flying with an Ent! If you like Star Wars Battlefront, and LOTR then this game is DEFINATLY for you. Over all I would say...

Fun, Five star

Graphics, Four star

Replay value, Four star

And then over all, Five star
