5.0 out of 5 stars Great!
This is a great game for a Tolkien fan, trading card freak, or just somebody looking to have fun. In it you get cards, featuring awesome clips from the movie. You get both Free people's and shadow cards, as you play for both in the game. You also get tokens to use as the twilight pool, and a storage box for extra cards. You can buy more cards by booster packs or other starter decks, from all three expansions (Mines of Moria, Realms of the Elf-lords, and the Two Towers). In the game you move your fellowship along the adventure path(sites) on your turn, while your opponent plays shadow, i.e. bad guy cards agaainst you. The roles reverse on his turn. The first one to get to site nine and survive, or to kill the opponant's ringbearer wins. The twilight pool is the tokens you use to keep track of card costs. On your turn you put tokens in, and then your opponant uses the tokens you put in (for the cost of your free peoples cards) against you as he plays his bad guy cards. It is very addicting and fun, with countless deck designs, and lots of strategy.

My 10 year old son and I got into playing Magic The Gathering this past year. It's a great game, but often it boils down to who's got the money to fork out for the "Killer" cards to win games in competition. So, we started looking for alternatives to Magic. Our mutual love of Middle Earth and some encouragement from the staff at our local Game Store resulted in us purchasing the LOTR Boxed starter set. the first thing I noticed was that it was packaged very nicely. the box it comes in will hold up well with moderate care. The other thing I noticed is that, unlike Magic cards, LOTR cards have a better finish and don't wear easily unlike Magic cards that deteriate quickly and require card sleeves else they lose their finish. (I still use sleeves for the LOTR cards anyway).
We bought an additional starter deck along with the deluxe starter box so that we could both play. Unlike other starter decks for other games, we found these very well balanced against each other; giving us both opportunities to taste victory.
The game instructions are not very clear, but it is very well supported by the makers website. We are fortunate to have a great one here locally.
I would not recommend purchasing this game for a child unless you or someone else plans on either:
1)get them to a gaming store for instruction on the game.
2)plan on learning the game with them.
It's not difficult to play, but it's not easy to figure out either. (it probably took a total of 30 minutes sitting down with game store staff to figure the whole thing out)
Once you do figure it out you will find yourself hooked. Like Magic, it's all strategy with the luck of the draw thrown in.
Hope you enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lord of the Rings: Deluxe Starter Set, is it good?, April 29, 2003

The Lord of the Rings TCG brings the fun of the book, into cards! This game, though, is not as easy as some of the other TCG or RPG. Like Pok-e-mon or Yu-Gi-Oh! you can't watch a tv show for hint's, rules, or even how to play. LOTR TCG is a whole new ball game. My friend and I got really hooked on it because we are real LOTR fan's. She bought the Two Tower's Aragorn deck(not deluxe) and we were reading tthe instuction manual. We were kind of wondering, huh? But if you go to Decipher's web site they have a walk through, through a match. They also have hints, stratagies, even user's own deck's. LOTR TCG is a great game to try out, and hey, maybe you'll like it. I sure do!
