This is one of my favorite Science Fiction stories ever. It's the first in a series of three books, I believe. I have them all in paper back, but I would not spend 9.99 to get it on my Kindle. But if anybody is interested in the stories, I highly reccommend buying the paper backs if you can find them. This particular book, Lord Valentine's Castle, has my favorite opening line of all time. Really great story line and well developed characters, and even though it's set on another world, it's not too hard to follow. Enjoy.

then after finding a note to myself stuck in an older book, read again in 2013. The note enthusiastically stated that LVC was the best book of 1984. Now i had just begun to read fantasy at that point, and then I gave up scifi almost completely, but had read Siverbergs scifi, enjoyed it so tried LVC. This was one of the books that swept me into created worlds, and helped me fall in love with that process of mental absortion, escape, travel, etc. LVC is not very complex. Its about a man becoming suddenly aware of himself , sometime, someplace, alone without memories, and is about his slow discover of who is he. Its not a mystery- you know who he is from almost the first page. But its just old fashion story telling about Valentine meeting people who help him discover who he is and who his enemies are. I sort became enamoured of him as his story unfolded, and in like with Majipoor, his nonviolent world, which is more of a mystery than our hero.If you are not expecting an enormous complex epic(Jordan,Hobbs, etc) you may like this novel, too.

This book has everything that I look for in a novel. The characters are probably its strongest point - their interaction and development keep me wanting more. Silverberg puts me right there on that huge, diverse planet. I found this book fascinating.

Silverberg’s finest moments are the ones where by his personal decree, punctuation marks are abolished and his writing is a river, and never a peaceful one.

You will not find this type of writing in Lord Valentine’s Castle. But you will find rivers, six thousand miles long. Also fallen kings, exotics species, aliens with two heads, aliens with three eyes, aliens with four hands and aliens with an unspecified number of tentacles.

You will also be tempted to juggle.

Before reading Lord Valentine's Castle, it would be good to have a general knowledge of the Majipoor universe, its “Powers”, geography and history. Personally, I started per internal chronological order. I have so far enormously enjoyed all the Majipoor novels and actually have found the first Prestimion novel, the best of the lot. But even without a Majipoorean crash course, you can still understand what Lord Valentine’s Castle is about and still get pleasure from it.

Do not hesitate and become a guest in Lord Silverberg’s Castle.

This book with its incredible descriptions of the flora and fauna of magnificent Marjipoor.A "super"sized earthlike planet, where the lack of heavy elements gives the denizens t only one earth gravity.
R..Silverberg is a master storyteller, he so well defines interpersonal relationships. Also the continuity is never violated. That is important in a fantasy-sci-fi book. I consider this and Valentine Pontifex, the 1st sequel, two of my all time favorite books.

When I was younger my mom had this book in her collection of fantasy books. When I was old enough she let me read it. I loved it! So after I bought my Kindle I had to have a copy of my own.

Lord Valentine's Castle is one of those books that define the term "escapist." Go visit the amazing planet Majipoor, where billions of people of many different races live and love. It's a Quest story, too; the characters travel incredible distances visit cities of heretofore unimaginable size, and relate to different types of characters. I hadn't read the novel since it first came out, and I was surprised how rich and new it seemed to follow the characters along the Quest toward the Castle. I immediately downloaded the sequels, too; and I'm looking forward to visiting Majipoor again!

This story takes place 10,000 years in the future and on a different planet. As such, it is called "speculative fiction". Lord Valentine's Castle has won every award the literary community can give, including their highest honor. I first read this book 20 years ago and was so impressed I never forgot the story or the characters. I am very pleased to find it is back in production and available at a reasonable price. This is an outstanding book. If you enjoy quality fiction, you need to get this book. You will be enthralled! The author's ability to describe characters and environments is unsurpassed. Highly recommended. Very entertaining.
