About the Author

Lorraine Heath wrote her first story at seven, and it involved a fisherman who fell in love with a mermaid. She has since moved on to writing about sexy cowboys and dashing English lords (and sometimes, cleverly, in the same book!). Publishers Weekly says she is a "master of her craft." She is, indeed, and along with being a New York Times and USA Today bestseller, she has won the RITA® Award, three Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice Awards, and a Career Achievement Award.

3.0 out of 5 stars Icky-Squicky Yet Emotionally Satisfying Redemption Story November 16, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
You know how old movies and cartoons sometimes do that thing where there's an angel and a devil perched on a character's shoulders, urging the character in opposing sides of some dilemma? That was me reading this book. As I read, my sensitive-to-feminist-issues better angel kept whimpering, "This is not okay," while the just-caught-in-the-fantasy devil growled, "You're over thinking this. Just feel all the lovely, happy Feelings."

The premise has an off-the-charts high Ick Factor. Evelyn is the sheltered, pampered by blow of the Earl of Wortham and his long deceased mistress; when the earl dies, his son auctions Evelyn, and her virginity, off to the highest bidder. Only Evelyn doesn't get it: she thinks she's being introduced around as a potential bride (which, given the cruel way her brother treats her, makes her a little bit Too Stupid to Live).

Lord Rafe Easton is the highest bidder. We're meant not to hold this against him, because he's not as boorish and crude as the other gents, and because he's not actually paying money for her (just forgiving her brother's gambling debt). He is so offended by the spectacle of the auction that it almost seems that, by "rescuing" her, he is being noble. (Feminist Angel calls foul, because just like all the other men there, he intends to make Evelyn his mistress and not give her any say in the matter, so she has not been saved from sexual slavery: he's just a kinder, gentler Master than the alternatives.)

Early in their acquaintance, Rafe takes Evelyn to St. Giles to show her the extreme poverty and degradation there.

2.0 out of 5 stars Best of the three but not outstanding June 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Sloppy errors in Lord of Wicked Intentions kept the nit picker in me from engaging in the book. He buys her candy that doesn't exist yet, he holds onto a coin from childhood despite being stripped naked and scrubbed in the workhouse (his belongings sold without his knowledge). He claims to process a million pounds a night at his casino, or the modern equivalent of over four billion dollars a month. His family chooses to help her without consulting him before they really know a thing about her. He beats up a guy at the end of the book for being crude to her at the beginning of the book when she's being sold at an auction by her brother. Because reasons?

I liked the overly sheltered Evelyn's slow realization that her entire world has changed. She may strike some readers as stupid but I saw her as unworldly and unequipped. Rafe goes a bit far in the self hatred, including being pretty crazy in regards to his sleeping arrangements, but I found his issues with being touched believable and well done. This is my least favorite series Heath has ever done, but of the three Lord of Wicked Intentions was my favorite. I'm not sure I'd read another Heath in this time period, however,

4.0 out of 5 stars Lord of Wicked Intentions~ April 30, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
What a lovely, heartbreaking, satisfying conclusion to Lorraine Heath's Lost Lords of Pembrook series! At long last we get the story of the youngest brother, Lord Rafe Eason and the woman who breaks down the walls around his heart, Miss Evelyn Chambers. Evelyn is saddened by the death of her father but her half brothers promise to look after her takes a very unexpected turn when he sells her off and after one glimpse, Rafe knows he has to have her...and no one tells him no. Yet when the circumstances become clear as to what Eve is to become to Rafe, he sees her shock and dismay and for some reason, gives her time to adjust. He finds himself fascinated by this slip of a woman, this woman who talks back to him and does not back down in fear. Rafe knows his dark and tortuous past will be too much, even for Eve and he realizes he must let her go before she finds out about how much pain he has caused and try to avoid causing pain to Eve. Eve is stubborn though and when his life is threatened he can only hope for Eve to find him so they can find a new life together. . .

I have been eagerly anticipating Rafe's story since I read the previous books in this series as I knew that underneath that gruff exterior was a kind, caring soul and I was so happy to see this all unfold. Rafe is tough and comes across rude and unbearing to those around him, which helps immensely in the running of his club, yet Eve with her boldness and gentle heart seeps into the cracks he has built around himself and sinks in in a way that Rafe never thought possible. I loved watching the relationship between Eve and Rafe develop but also that of Rafe and his brothers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Satisfying conclusion May 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I have to say that I have liked all three installments of the Lost Lords of Pembrook. And while this book wasn't my favorite of the three, I still enjoyed it. As with the books featuring his brothers, Rafe's story delivers on the recurring elements of a tortured hero and a love that helps him find peace and redemption.

Rafe is the youngest Easton brother, the one who was left behind in a workhouse after his uncle killed his father. His life there --and later, on the streets-- has turned him into a very hard man. He never got over his brothers' desertion and as a result, he has never allowed himself to care for anyone since. Add to that a severe aversion to being touched and he's not exactly a knight in shining armor.

He meets Evelyn when her jerkwad of a half-brother tried to auction her off to be a mistress for a nobleman. Rafe's not in the market for a mistress, but he is drawn to Eve and he can't bear the thought of her belonging to someone else. So he takes her for his own.

When Eve's brother set up the party that night, she thought he was trying to find her a husband. It wasn't until she was delivered to Rafe's door that she found out what was intended for her. And then she had a choice to make: give up her virtue or be turned out on the streets.

Before you get too mad at Rafe, know he never forces himself on her. He's not a fraction of the monster he thinks he is. Generally, I am all over the tortured hero with an underdeveloped sense of self-worth. And it wasn't that I disliked him, it's just there were times he was little too emo. On top of that, I wasn't really satisfied with explanation on the touching thing. I don't want to give it away, but his reaction seemed like it was perhaps an issue of a sexual nature.

More About the Author

Lorraine Heath always dreamed of being a writer. After graduating from the University of Texas, she wrote training manuals, press releases for a publicist, articles, and computer code, but something was always missing. In 1990, she read a romance novel and became not only hooked on the genre, but quickly realized what her writing lacked: rebels, scoundrels, and rogues. She's been writing about them ever since, for both adult and young adult readers (as Rachel Hawthorne, Jade Parker, and with her son as J. A. London). Her work has been recognized with numerous industry awards including RWA's RITA(R), a HOLT medallion, a Romantic Times Career Achievement Award, and four Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Awards. Her novels have appeared on bestseller lists, including USA Today and the New York Times.
