Entertaining, though somewhat silly, October 21, 2008
This review is from: Lords of Avalon: Sword of Darkness (Hardcover)
Lords of Avalon is a manga-style graphic novel based on the work of Sherilyn kenyon. I have a sort of love hate thing going on with her work. On one hand, she has a fantastic imagination. On the other hand, her books have a juvenile simplistic quality that I don't like. I'm not sure whether reading her in comic book enhances this puerileness or showcases it. Lords has some beautiful artwork, particularly the male characters such as Blaise. Kerrigan reminds me a bit of Cloud from the famous Chinese comic Storm Riders.
The story is sort of silly, and this is where the book's weakness really lies. It is based loosely on the King Arthur mythos and involves Kerrigan who is an immortal demon, and a silly sue of a character named Seren who is a peasant weaver. Morgan le Fay is the bad guy, complete with her male harem of elven hotties. There is some typical romantic/mystic mumbo jumbo between Seren and Kerrigan, and some funny quips from Blaise, who I think is by far the cutest and funniest of the characters in the story. More Blaise! I really must say the artist is excellent.
I am at a loss as to what the market is for this book? The story contains nudity so it isn't geared towards kids, but the writing is a very juvenile? The novel contains a parental advisory and with good reason. There is a very mild orgy scene, and a scene or two where the heroine seems to be getting her clothes torn off. There is no graphic sex or genitalia, but it certainly isn't a kiddie book.
I give the art 5 stars and the story 3, which makes this a 4 star read.

Kenyon Goes Graphic, December 1, 2008
This review is from: Lords of Avalon: Sword of Darkness (Hardcover)
This graphic novel is a shorter version of her novel length Sword of Darkness. Excellent depiction of settings and compaction of script. An excellent read for Fantasy or Romance readers.

interesting take on a great book, March 5, 2009
This review is from: Lords of Avalon: Sword of Darkness (Hardcover)
As a serious fan of both Sherrilyn Kenyon and graphic novels I found this a fun and fast read. Obviously not as in depth as the novel it is based on I found the artwork close to how I envisioned Kenyon's characters. I bought this to complete my collection and wasn't expecting the story to translate as well as it did. For Kenyon Minions and graphic art fan this is a good buy for sure.
