Before Rifts or Gurps There Was Lords of Creation..., September 5, 2008
This review is from: Lords of Creation RPG [BOX SET] (Game)
It's indeed a fascinating game and easily the precursor of product lines such as Rifts and the old Fringeworthy, with rules kept to a minimum and easily understandable and a conspicuous list of foes and enemies such to keep even the most D&Deranged master happy, including very original creatures I can easily guess where exploited here for the first time. On the down side, the rules set is a little dated in respect to more recent games, especially regarding the treatment of weapons and armour which are extremely generic. The authors moreover don't give us any real advice to adapt real weapons to the setting and I find this a little frustrating.
As the game originally should have come with the adventure "The Horn of Roland" included, there are no ideas presented to the game master to introduce the player characters to the multiverse of Lords of Creation in this basic set, so - unless you can provide your players with a good starting point for their characters being what they are (powerful individual meant to reach the status of divine beings) - you're stuck in trying to procure for yourself the "The Horn of Roland" adventure, which is not too hard as of today, but I can't say so for the future, since the game and related adventures are out of print since the second half of the eighties.
All in all, if you're interested in the old school kind of games I strongly advice you to give a try to this little pearl in the ocean of mediocrity of the new wave games published today by the majors. This advice is good also if you're the kind of gamer who has played only one kind of game (like D&D, Vampires or another of today's big hitters); maybe, just maybe, you'll find something really new, even if it comes from the past!
