If anyone reading this is a fan of the Dead Boys, the Damned, or even Sham 69 do yourself a favor and pick this one up. The drums sound fantastic, Bators voice still spits a lot of venom, it has goth textures but its not goth, and the album does what a lot of other side projects forget to do: it rocks. Almost every track works the two standouts being the openers "New Church" and "Russian Roulette". The bonus tracks offer a nice contrast and you can see why they were left off, still good songs though. Pick it up.

I don't know why they switched the cover--the old, sparse, dagger on black background was great--but this is a nearly perfect album of rock. It's punk, it's a bit gothic, it's got hooks, it's got a lot of attitude, and it sounds great over 20 years later. It absolutely holds up today.
The Lords have resurfaced of late, minus the late Stiv, of course, but they've remastered and re-released their albums and even put out some double disc goodies of live material and other gems. Not a bad song on here, though I'd say the bookend tracks of Lords of the New Church and Holy War (how appropriate these days) really frame it well. Eat Your Heart Out has the right snarling, biting feel to it, especially that chorus. Open Your Eyes is about as relevant as ever, and there are slower but no less great tunes in Russian Roulette and Livin' on Livin'. The production is good--this was basically a punk supergroup, but they are way more than 'punk'. There's a darker feel, and a more cerebral tone than a lot of other loud, snotty punk bands (like previous incarnations of some of the members). This new version also has a nice bonus track, Young Don't Cry. Highly recommended album for rock fans, for anyone who wants a bit more than what is called punk (or goth) these days. Excellent group.

This cd is incredible, short but incredible. I was inspired in high school to do a slide show for Apocalypso and Holy War. Great imagery. I like the original cover, the dagger on a black background. I already own the IRS version. Not sure about the quality of remastering. The bass tones seem to be overpowering to the point of distortion. If you don't own the Lords (Stiv era) start here. Not a bad song on it. Excellent cover of Russian Roulette. Livin' On Livin', Open Your Eyes (the single), Eat Your Heart Out, I could go on, ahh what the heck, Question of Temperature (Cover), Li'l Boys Play With Dolls (A tribute to the New York Dolls), Portobello, and New Church all rock.

Their Best Album!,

Original guitarist from pioneering UK punk band The Damned, Brian James and frontman Stiv Bator who lead the equally influential US east Coast punk band The Dead Boy's formed The Lords Of The New Church along with bassist Dave Tregunna (originally from Sham 69) and drummer Nicky Turner (originally from The Barracudas) formed this so-called punk supergroup in 1982.
This is The Lord's debut album, originally released in 1982. Easily their best album, there is simply not a bad track here and for the most part, this still stands as a landmark release that bridges the gap between punk, goth, metal, garage and early 80's new wave. Although self produced, the sound is unique and shows a maturity and power the band would rarely achieve again and influenced a vast number of other bands that followed them. In their debut, The Lords come off as an intriguing rock n' roll hybrid mixing the dark, lyrical and sonic psychedelia of The Doors with the biting immediacy and aggressiveness of The Clash fronted by Iggy Pop. This is the 2003 remastered cd version on Track Records of The Lord's classic debut album originally released in 1982. The "group painting" cover on this album is the original UK album and cd cover as released via Illegal Records in '82. The more familiar "black" album cover with the small gold dagger was only used for the US vinyl, cassette and cd release on IRS Records in North America. This release features a short essay about the band and album by guitarist Brian James as well as three bonus tracks including the previously very hard to find "Young Don't Cry" which is not on any other cd release past or present. The remastering is a bit heavy on the bass and drums compared to the original release but not excessively so. Highly recommended. |
