Book Description

August 1, 1960
All of Thomas Watson's writings and sermons are replete with sound doctrine, practical wisdom, and heart-searching application. His profound spirituality, gripping remarks, practical illustrations, and beauty of expression make him one of the most irresistible of the Puritans.

He was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he was noted for remarkably hard study. In 1646 he was commenced a sixteen year pastorate at St. Stephen's Walbrook. In 1651 he was imprisoned briefly with some other ministers for his share in Christopher Love's plot to recall Charles II. He was released on 30th June,1652, and was formally reinstated vicar of St. Stephen's Walbrook. He obtained great fame and popularity as preacher until the Restoration, when he was ejected for nonconformity. Notwithstanding the rigor of the acts against dissenters, Watson continued to exercise his ministry privately as he found opportunity. Upon the Declaration of Indulgence in 1672 he obtained a license for the great hall in Crosby House. After preaching there for several years, his health gave way, and he retired to Barnston in Essex, where he died suddenly while praying in secret. He was buried on 28th July, 1686.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding exposition of Christ's great lesson on prayer, November 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Lord's Prayer (Paperback)
Thomas Watson presents both the glory and simplicity of Christ's lesson on prayer in all its fullness. As the third work in Watson's trilogy supporting the ideas taught in the Westminster catechisms, Watson develops the ideas behind each phrase of the prayer with the best interpreter of Christ's words,Scripture itself. Often praised for his particularly lengthy treatment of the second petition, "thy kingdom come," I found the expostion of "Hallowed be thy name" the most compelling to my faith. This work changed my view of prayer, proving the motivation of prayer needed not to be my own desires, but the glory of God.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic puritan work on Prayer, September 17, 2004
This review is from: Lord's Prayer (Paperback)
Thomas Watson is one of the easiest puritan writers for modern church-goers to ready. Anything by Watson is a great place to start reading the puritans. He is much easier than John Owen. This work on the Lord's prayer is great! This is one of the great Christian classics on prayer. If you need insights for teaching or want some help in your prayer life you will not find a better book on prayer than this. Watson takes the Lord's prayer line by line and not only shows its meaning but how you can use it in your Christian walk. You will not be disappointed. This book also makes a great gift for your pastor or any one who loves reading the puritans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meat From the Lord's Prayer, June 24, 2004
This review is from: Lord's Prayer (Hardcover)
Puritan scholar Thomas Watson's classic on the Lord's Prayer should be in the hands of every serious disciple. The book explores with great depth every aspect of the Lord's Prayer as found in Matthew 6:9-13. Watson is a man of God who gives us true meat to feast on and gives the disciple a longing to pray.
