One day I looked at myself in a full length mirror. As I stood there in my underwear my eyes closed in shame. I couldnt believe I allowed myself to get to this point. After three children, I felt like I would never get my body (any body) back. I fell on the floor in my bedroom and wept for God to show me what to do. Gluttony was my biggest sin. My idol. My obsession. I cried to God to save me from this incredible sin in my life. "I just want to eat when I feel hungry, I dont want to think about it every waking moment! PLEASE GOD!!!" After about 15 minutes I peeled myself off the floor and went to bed. The next morning I went to christianbooks.com and found The Lords Table. I did an Amazon search to see what the ratings were and I was flabergasted on how many 5 stars it was given. "What does this book say that all the others didnt?" was my first thought. But being obsessed with weight loss material I purchased the book. Now 25 days into the program I am down 18lbs but whats better than that. Is my walk with God. If you have come to a point in your life where its not about you anymore, but about God. Then this book is for you. You will gain control. Visit online www.settingcaptivesfree.com to be assigned a Mentor during your new walk with God.

I spent years searching for the answer to my weight problem. I tried every thing, even other Christian weight loss books. But this book changed my life! I have been set free from my addiction to overeating. Food is no longer my master - it's my servant, and I use it to grow healthy and strong. But more importantly, this book has brought me closer to God, deepening my relationship with Him. The focus is no longer on food, it's on Jesus - and this book was the guide that helped me get there.

I suggest buying the book and doing the free online course. It's no accident that you've found this book. The course is incredible. I began the course a broken person, with a broken body, spirit and heart. Through this course, I learned that God makes all things new, he tears down to rebuild. This course healed my heart and made me a different person. Yeah, I lost a lot of weight too, but that's not the important part. The important part is that God is in my heart now. I've learned to fill my heart, not my stomach.

NOT a "my-way-or-the-highway" eating plan!,
By
This review is from: The Lord's Table: A Biblical Approach to Weight Loss (Setting Captives Free) (Spiral-bound)
I'm having a difficult time understanding a previous reviewer's comment that Mike Cleveland teaches in this book that his eating plan is the only acceptable approach (vs. Atkins, etc.). The following is a direct quote from The Lord's Table online course:
"Welcome to The Lord's Table! This course is a 60-Day program to help you gain control of your eating habits and to lose weight, if needed. Here is a suggested eating schedule to help you get up and running. The suggested eating days are like training wheels on a bike. Eventually you'll outgrow them, but they're helpful to get you started and you will feel more secure having them guide you. In The Lord's Table, this eating schedule is offered as a guide, not a requirement. Eventually you will develop your own schedule of eating that honors the Lord and produces weight loss or maintains optimum weight." Doesn't exactly sound like he's saying his way is the only acceptable way to me - does it to you? I find it frustrating that someone would not only misrepresent this author's teaching, but would cast aspersions on Mr. Cleveland's character as well. He "likes to toot his own horn" because he (supposedly) asked some who have been successful with breaking food's grip on their lives to come to this Amazon site and write a review? Sounds like getting the word out to me. This is a wonderful program, with spot-on encouragement and firmly grounded Biblical teaching for those of us who find food has far too great a place in our lives. I highly recommend it.

This is the one you've been looking for!,
By Joanne B. (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Lord's Table: A Biblical Approach to Weight Loss (Setting Captives Free) (Spiral-bound)
Hi, my name is Joanne. I'm 39 years old, married 20 years with three daughters that are 18, 15 and 9. I accepted the Lord as my Savior when I was 18 but it wasn't until 5 years ago when I found a wonderful church that I finally started to grow in my relationship with Jesus. When I was younger I used to be the skinny twig in school that everyone was jealous of. After my third daughter it caught up to me and I started putting on the weight. Two months ago I was at my heaviest weight of 180 and miserably as all get out. I hated being that overweight. I would eat whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted, in whatever amount I wanted. And all the while I knew it was wrong but couldn't stop. Then I somehow stumbled upon Setting Captives Free while surfing the internet. The funny thing is, I've tried to retrace my steps to how I found it and I just can't seem to do it! It was all God! Anyways, I was intrigued and signed up for the Lord's Table and my life was changed. On the first study my eyes were opened to the truth of my overeating and I knew I was on to something good. The first week I couldn't figure out where I'd find time to walk, but after praying about it God showed me where and I started walking 1 1/2 miles to 2 miles a day. Now I'm working out at a local gym with my two older daughters. I've grown so much in my relationship with the Lord through this study. I've learned to turn to Him when I'm tempted to eat when I shouldn't and He's taught me to be disciplined and self-controlled. I couldn't have done it without my faith in Jesus. All the glory goes to the Lord for all the changes in me. I even want to look into doing a Lord's Table study at my church at one point.

I have not yet completed this study, but really think it is wonderful. The Bible Study aspect is really well put together and I have enjoyed the new thoughts and ideas it has brought to my life. It really changes the way you look at food and the satisfaction it gives you. I also recommend the website settingcaptivesfree.com where you can participate in the study online as an addition to the book. The materials are all A +++

I have not yet received my book but I have been doing the free online study for the last week. In this week, I have lost 6 pounds, never once felt like I was on a diet, my desire for food has been completely altered and I have grown closer to God.
This is an amazing biblical study on what causes us to gain weight, our indulgence in food. Although it says we can eat what we want, because the Lord is working in so many ways during this study, I have found that I have just made good choices. My biggest change has been portions. I have not denied myself the tastes that I enjoy, I have just cut my portions in half. The Lord is using this study to really teach me. I have learned that food alone will never satisfy my deepest needs, only He can.

Not just another diet program,
By "radiklysaved" (NE Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Lord's Table: A Biblical Approach to Weight Loss (Setting Captives Free) (Spiral-bound)
I was introduced to Setting Captives Free and specifically The Lord's Table through another message board I'm involved in. I liked the sound of the course and decided to check it out. I then signed up to start the course right away. I had no idea for what I was getting myself into! I was confronted with my sin of overeating from early on. I had a hard time admitting to the fact that I was a glutton and lazy to boot. I reasoned with myself that I wasn't "that bad", I didn't have "that much" weight to lose. But by the grace of God, I did admit that I was "that bad" and was able to repent. I was pleased to learn that this program wasn't about eating this or that or not eating this or that, but it was to focus our lives on Jesus and feast at his table and that's where changes would occur.I grew up going to church but it wasn't until I was in the middle of the separation with my first husband that I truly committed my life to the Lord. It was my desire to serve him from that point on. But along the way somewhere, I withdrew from ministry and service in my church home and turned life into a pity party for myself. I was miserable and turned to food instead of Jesus. I am thankful that TLT confronted me at every turn and made me face up to my own selfish motives and desires that was killing my relationship with the Heavenly Father, my husband, and family. I have been so enthralled with how this program teaches spiritual truths that I have known most of my life and how they effect every avenue of my life, especially my eating problem. I hesitate in proclaiming that I am victorious in my problem with eating. I feel I am only victorious moment by moment, choice by choice with the help of God. I am weak when I think I can do it all on my own.

By
This review is from: The Lord's Table: A Biblical Approach to Weight Loss (Setting Captives Free) (Spiral-bound)
I lost 17 lbs by following the Lord's Table course. I would have lost more, had I followed it exactly. I believe it is superior to other courses because it addresses the root causes of over-eating and does not propose any quick fixes or magical formulas. In fact it is completely different from other courses by allowing you to eat anything!I had gained about 30 lbs within a few years after coming to America during the software boom in the 1990s. It may be hard to believe, but food in America is actually cheaper than in India. At home my mother made sure that our diet was nourishing. However, nothing prepared me for the deluge of food, when I came to America . I ate emotionally - whenever depressed or angry, I would make for the fridge. Adding to that, in America we use the car instead of our legs for transportation. Becoming desperate, I found the Lord's Table via a google search. The studies were deep and powerful if applied. I repented of my greed and emotional eating. I learned the concept "feed on Jesus" and of regular intense exercising and self-disciplining the body. I also realized that food and posessions can become idols that we chase after instead of pursuing God! However I found the regular fasting and liquid days very hard to practise during workdays. My mentor (another key concept) Mark M., was patient and encouraging throughout the course (I took 5 months to complete the 2 month course!). I believe that settingcaptivesfree.com is doing a vital work, equal in importance to the Jesus Film project etc. Using the internet, many across the world can be guided to Freedom, and for free. I remember with sadness people who might have benefitted from settingcaptivesfree.com. Someone I know, died recently from an overdose linked heart attack. Being Saved alone, is not enough. One must find Freedom.

This 60 day The Lord's Table study is an excellent Bible based resource that will lead you to a new understanding of your eating habits. The lessons are designed to be studied one day at a time with questions at the end of each one to help reinforce what is being taught. You will no longer need to diet after you read this book. You will learn why you overeat and be able to avoid those pitfalls with strength from the Lord. You will be able to eat all foods in moderation. You will find fulfillment in the Lord. The Lord through this study has changed my life forever by giving me a new hunger for His Word and a desire to please the Him in all areas of my life, especially with my eating. I have lost 46 lbs. and am rejoicing in the Lord for this eye opening book. |
