5.0 out of 5 stars Don't judge based on the sample October 7, 2009
Format:Kindle Edition
Having read Gena Showalter's Atlantis series and loved it, I wanted to give the Lords of the Underworld a try. I downloaded the sample and could barely get past the first few pages. It was flat and one-dimensional and I felt like I was picking up in the middle of the story, so I gave up and decided the books weren't for me. Then a month later I came back and read a review that said the sample was actually taken from a short story prequel that was only about 50 pages or so. That made me go ahead and buy the bundle and give it a try-- I AM SO GLAD I DID!!

I skipped the first story completely and had no trouble at all understanding what was going on. The three books included in the bundle kept me thoroughly entertained for over a week. Each story was excellent, I loved the couples and the fact that the story line is continued throughout the books. These are really great paranormal romance with an excellent plot line. I liked that it was a new twist on the paranormal world that didn't include vampires or shapeshifters, but took a more mythological approach with the immortal warriors and gods and goddesses. Don't be deterred by the Kindle sample, the books are great.

4.0 out of 5 stars It just gets better October 6, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A coworker recommended the Black Dagger Brotherhood series (J.R. Ward) to me in August. I devoured the entire series in a weekend. Then she recommended The Fallen Angels series (J.R. Ward) in September. I was impressed how versatile the author proved to be. Then she recommended Gena Showalter's Lords of the Underworld.

Three pages into Darkest Fire and I was sure that I had purchased the wrong book. This couldn't possibly be what was recommended to me. The writing style was terribly amateur, and the storyline was hurried. I'm unimpressed by stories that fall too neatly into place. Also, I felt detached and disgusted with the love scene between Geryon and the goddess of opression. It was worse than a man trying to write a love scene from the woman's perspective.

The Darkest Night was far better! I fell in love with Maddox and Ashlyn again and again, but their love was a little too cliche. And, Ashlyn's self-sacrifice was unrealistic and cheesy.

The Darkest Kiss was great!! Lucien and Anya were perfect for each other; I was rooting for them the entire book. Absolutely perfect, and this should be a model for books to come.

The Darkest Pleasure was okay! Reyes and Danika were frustrating and interesting. Danika gives it up way to easily(actually all the girls do, the Jezebels), then they have to find some way to bring the original turmoil back into the relationship. It wasn't bad, but it was a step down from Darkest Kiss.

All in all, I was able to emmerse myself in all of the stories except for the first one. This series is definitely a copycat of J.R. Ward's books...seriously...obvious...but I'm going to keep up with all three series until the authors stop writing them. Wonderful job and I'm downloading the next ones to read on my vacation next week.

Question: why does everyone growl and hiss all the time. Sexy yes, but I'd think they had a problem if they didn't stop.

Statement: I'm sorry but not all women keep hair down there, it doesn't taste like honey or peaches, the taste of the inside of someone else's mouth is not always a turn on unless they brush their teeth first (thank you Maddox and Ashlyn), do they have to swallow the whole load? I mean these guys are stacked, big balls and all, one of these girls needs to gag or something. Speaking of which, how are these girls taking it down their throat? I know that sounds Rated R, but if you're reading the review you know what your getting into.

NOTE: The first story in this compilation is more like a story within a story. It is a fable from the universe Ms. Showalter created for our Lords of the Underworld. The style is very different from the other books and might be better enjoyed after reading one or two of them first.

One of the more addictive paranormal romance series that I have come across, I HIGHLY recommend the Lord of the Underworld series to any fan of the genre. If you more into the paranormal than the romance, you should still enjoy this, but it does heavily lean toward the romance. The world created here is full of color and life. The atmosphere is dark and rich. The settings are exotic and dangerous. The supporting characters make you desperate for the story to just keep going. My biggest problem is reading each book too fast.

These are not a books to try to read in a waiting room unless you want your doctor to wait for you- because you will not want to put it down. It will make your pulse jump, your breath fast and deep and you will not want any interruptions.

Contained in this compilation: The Darkest Fire, The Darkest Night (Hqn), The Darkest Kiss (Hqn), and The Darkest Pleasure (Hqn)

The Darkest Fire: Prequel to the series, this is more short story than anything else. This is a fable of fire & brimstone, and love, within the Lords of the Underworld Universe. This does not need to be read in any order and stands on its own quite nicely. The writing is thick with imagery and sensuality- as is Ms. Showalter's trademark. Don't look for depth- just desperation and passion. It wraps around you like a smooth glass of port.

The Darkest Night: Excellent first book for a series. It reaches out and grabs you within the first few pages. This is no light romance- this is hot and heavy. Leave any need for light flirtation and gentle lovemaking outside the door. These characters jump of the page and grab you to never let go. Maddox, keeper of Violence, & Ashlyn are wonderful and the storyline that begins to reveal itself is brilliant. This is a nonstop ride of passion and thrills and when it's over you want to start all over again.

The Darkest Kiss: My favorite of this bunch. The romance between our keeper of Death and our little goddess of chaos is full of humor and fun- though no less passionate. It was just thrilling to watch Anya dance around Lucien and to see our grim leader crack and bend to passion. This is a story of turning weakness into strength and continues the theme of a true partnership developing out of passion.

The Darkest Pleasure: This is Reyes, keeper of Pain, and Danika's story. I didn't find this one to be as strong as books 1 & 2, but certainly not lacking in passion or suspense. Although Reyes is one of my favorites of the Lords, I had more trouble relating to Danika. Her character had been through tremendous trauma in prior books, but still it felt that she was almost too skittish. Nothing she did was either unreasonable or out of character, I think it is just a personal preference of mine... For the majority of the book, the fate of Danika's family was in question and I think this ended up being a bit more tension than I felt the story-line and romance could maintain. Something akin to being on a high wire for a few minutes too long- at some point, you just want to fall off already.

Bottom line though- this is a truly engrossing series.

For a comparison I suggest:
- Lara Adrian's Kiss of Midnight (The Midnight Breed, Book 1)
- J.R. Ward's Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 1)
And perhaps...
- Jacquelyn Frank's Jacob (The Nightwalkers, Book 1)
- Alexis Morgan's Dark Protector (Paladins of Darkness, Book 1)
- Alyssa Day's Atlantis Rising (Warriors of Poseidon, Book 1)
though this series ranks as one of the best of the bunch.
