A facinating glimpse into the past, of Los Alamos, NM, and the assembly of the world's first nuclear device. Many photographs support the story from its beginning, in 1943, when the government chose the Pajarito Plateau, home to a few small ranches, seasonal homesteaders, and the Los Alamos Ranch School. The beauty of the place and its archaeological treasures had prompted consideration of the plateau for national park status early in the 20th century, but those who valued its resources, and its isolation, had defeated the idea.
