First of a series of monographs that will deal with single issues relevant to the history of Los Alamos. The series is called THE LOS ALAMOS STORY. Monograph 1 is an overview of Los Alamos from its geological/geographical setting, to its many populations--Indians, Spanish settlers, homesteaders, to the famous Los Alamos Ranch School, to the Manhattan Project which developed the atomic bomb in World War II, and to 1949 when the town was recognized as a part of the state of New Mexico rather than as a federal district.
