Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Devotees of supermarket tabloids will double over with laughter at McEnroe's ( Swimming Chickens ) spoofs. Comprised of case histories "conscientiously fabricated" from items read in checkout lines, this self-help satire holds nothing sacred. McEnroe pontificates with riotous charm, sending up superstars ("The Man Who Mistook Himself for Michael Jackson's Love Child") and talk shows ("The Compulsive Geraldomaniac"). On the question of eating red meat, the author is at his goofy best: Anti-Steak, "a magic-bullet substance," is being developed to counteract side effects of beef and, in the industry's Cattle Reef Project, cows are bred to breathe underwater to "thus acquire the many healthful aspects of fish." Five "Lost Ann Landers Letters," interspersed throughout, push that column to the outer limits. Few of the inflated, self-promoting or self-absorbed preoccupations of contemporary America escape McEnroe's sting.

From Library Journal

This book bills itself as the "last self-help you'll ever need." That may not be exactly true. If you ever needed a book to teach you how to stop groaning aloud or chuckling at unpredictable intervals, you'll need one after reading this collection of bizarre how-to essays. There's "How To Marry a Fanatic," "What To Do in the Supermarket" (a three-part essay), and "What To Do When Your Spouse Is Away." McEnroe's humor is off-beat and sometimes tricky to follow, but libraries with a sizable and varied humor section will want this. Where else could one find a case history of "The Man Who Was Bored By Elvis"?-- Carol Spielman Lezak, General Learning Corp., Northbrook, Ill.

5.0 out of 5 stars McEnroe, Where Are You?, February 11, 2000
This review is from: Lose Weight Through Great Sex with Celebrities: The Elvis Way (Paperback)
Not that too many people are ever likely to read this review at this point, but this book, which is now totally dated (topically) and which I've read probably 20 times, STILL kills me. Why this guy never put another book out is beyond me; I've been waiting for years. WAY, WAY funnier than Dave Barry or Steve Martin's Pure Drivel.

5.0 out of 5 stars The funniest book I ever read..., May 3, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Lose Weight Through Great Sex with Celebrities: The Elvis Way (Paperback)
I'm not kidding. This book makes me laugh so hard. My copy is beat up now from years of reading, so I keep it safe and only look at it every year or so. Definitely recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the funniest book ever! Similar to Dave Barry., February 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Lose Weight Through Great Sex with Celebrities: The Elvis Way (Paperback)
This book is written in a style similar to Dave Barry, but funnier. Colin's use of descriptions of incidents exceeds my ability to put it into words.
