Book Description

April 2004
Losing Hazel will break your heart and put it back together again. Come on in and meet Hazel, an intelligent, intuitive, empowering, funny, and extremely loving woman you’ll be glad to know; truly a one-in-a-million Mom.

Set in Detroit, Michigan in 1972 through the present, Losing Hazel tells the inspiring story of Hazel, whose sudden death one autumn afternoon reshaped the lives of her daughter, Lynn, and the people around her. Scanlan intersperses memories of her Mother’s life with the cold reality of her untimely death. A string of colorful, interesting characters come to life and seem to jump out of the pages, making them impossible to forget. If you’ve ever loved someone with all your heart, you’ll relate to this deeply moving book, filled with laughter, music, and an ever-present, always-generous love. A love that Scanlan reminds us, doesn’t end with death. Months after she died, Hazel comes to her surprised daughter to share the big secret to her past.

Losing Hazel is a unique love story that will become a part of you. Find out why people are raving about the little book that roars!

4.0 out of 5 stars Friends from long ago..., July 4, 2009
This review is from: Losing Hazel (Paperback)
I have known Lynn Scanlan since junior high - "back in the '60's". We graduated from high school together and have met up at several reunions. Many of our classmates have lost touch, but a core group of us strives to stay connected. I always knew Lynn was creative and artistic, but I never knew she would be able to write such a heartfelt story about the hardest time in her life. "Losing Hazel" has helped me through my own grief; our 16 year old son died suddenly last October. Lynn's words reach out to all; whether you have been through a similar situation or not her story helps you be a better person.

5.0 out of 5 stars A tribute to the everlasting love of mother and daughter, May 26, 2004

This review is from: Losing Hazel (Paperback)
Losing Hazel is intense. Lynn's pain, rage and despair touched my own wounds. At first, I felt like I couldn't recommend this book to anyone who was too vulnerable, but I'm assured by others that vulnerability demands acknowledgment and validation; this is the perfect book to do that.

By the end of the story we know Hazel as a vital light in the life of her daughter, granddaughters, and many others. We see Lynn as a reflection of that light in ways she never could have imagined.

This unique book is a tribute to the power of the everlasting love of a mother and daughter. I love the arty jacket, and I have the book displayed in my living room. I'm giving it to my friends. Way to go, Lynn!
