A lesbian working for the Tampa, Florida Police Department, officer Lois Marrero was killed in the line of duty. Losing Lois looks at her death and the resulting legal and political questions raised by her life partner's bid for spousal pension benefits.
In the weeks following Marrero's death, Mickie Mashburn--a fellow Tampa officer--struggles with her loss. She must also contend with a hostile media and an unsettling claim that Marrero had been unfaithful to her. The hurtful accounts of Marrero's alleged "affair" become more difficult to take when Mashburn learns the source for these allegations are Marrero's own sister and mother. Meanwhile, the police department holds her an emotional hostage as the pension board debates her rights to obtain survivor benefits.
By focusing on this one couple's tragic story, Losing Lois makes a powerful case for the rights of all lesbian and gay couples to secure spousal benefits.
