This is a practical and comforting book,

I bought this book shortly after my Mother died and found it helpful enough to pass along to my siblings. The first section deals with terminal illness so if you are searching for help during this difficult time, buy this book. It will take you through those latter stages of illness, through to death and the grieving afterwards. Of course, sudden death of a parent is also covered. It is easy to read and understand. It is obviously written with compassion and continues to comfort and give practical guidance during a most difficult time. I recommend it highly and am recommending it to bereaved friends and family. There are more complex books out there about death and dying but at least start with this one.

I find this a nice basic first book to help me with the loss of my dad. It covers many different situations, from sudden death to long term illness and death. Throughout the text, it gives many specific examples of people in such situations of loss and how they respond emotionally. Yet, I think that the author's own words have been the most valuable to me - she seems to offer ideas with simplicity and compassion. I have found many sentences that really help me in terms of being kind to myself, accepting of my own feelings, and less isolated in my grief. There is also advice on how you may function as part of a family that undergoes this loss, which I found valuable. This includes how other siblings, family members or the remaining parent may react and how your relationship with them may be expected to respond. I suspect that other books would have similar ideas, but I am very thankful that I found this one I would recommend this to friends and will recommend it to my brothers.

Great book. My Employee Assistance Counselor at work suggested it when my dad died a few months ago. I found it very helpful to read that I am not crazy and that the things I'm feeling and thinking are normal. It covers a variety of scenarios, which I might need in the future when my other parent dies. You don't have to read the whole thing like a textbook. Find the parts that are relevant and it really helps.
