Book Description

March 17, 1997
In Losing the Weight of the World, Jonathan Kramer and Diane Dunaway Kramer skillfully integrate the knowledge and techniques of modern psychology with the teachings of the world's great religions to show how ordinary people, busy with the demands of jobs and families, can live a full and enriching spiritual life. Their ten-part "diet," based on ten eternal principles common to all belief systems, will nurture and nourish a new spirituality in readers, whether they are Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, or followers of no specific faith at all.

In an appealing combination of inspiring quotations from spiritual leaders and writings, examples from real-life situations, and suggestions for simple activities and exercises, In Losing the Weight of the World explains how we can lose the weight of the world by lightening the load of our personal problems, focusing our awareness, living in the present, balancing our worldly desires and goals and the harmony and Oneness our spirits seek, and discovering our basic goodness.

Driven by our survival-and success-oriented personalities, we all too often ignore the cravings of our spirits. In Losing the Weight of the World teaches us that life is a spiritual feast when we learn to taste what's set before us."

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Blending popular psychology and viewpoints from a variety of religions, the authors (Why Men Don't Get Enough Sex & Women Don't Get Enough Love (Pocket, 1991) have cooked up a self-help menu for the soul in the form of a ten-part spiritual diet. Most readers will be able to identify with the issues discussed here, including stress, self-criticism, emotional complexity, and the pace of daily life. The major emphasis is on developing breathing techniques to get through the tribulations we face regularly. Chapters are well delineated, and most offer helpful information. Although the cooking metaphor becomes a bit trite, this book does offer solid information. Not a necessary purchase, this nevertheless offers a good helping of advice that is not too difficult to swallow.?Priscilla Davis Dann, Gates Mills P.L., Cleveland

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, life-calming book, I couldn't put it down!, November 9, 1999

This review is from: Losing the Weight of the World: A Spiritual Diet to Nourish (Hardcover)
Great perspective of life, I liked it so much I bought copies for my whole WhereToTurn.com staff; even my non-reader loved it! Will change the way you look at things; has a very calming, soothing effect for those 'burning the candle at both ends'. Very helpful, I feel that everyone caught up in a hectic life will benefit from it!

This is simply the best of its genre. I own both the audio and print versions. A few pages or minutes of listening can calm and brighten my day. An open-minded, upbeat, accessible book on spirituality that has something to offer everyone.
