For those expecting FOABP, you should keep moving. SW is a multi-dimentional artist, and he has said that Bass Communion is his most personal project. This is music more for contemplation than entertainment. My choice for listening to this CD is alone and in the dark.

5.0 out of 5 stars A review for someone looking to explore Steven Wilson's other projects, September 26, 2011
This review is from: Loss (CD w/DVD) (Audio CD)
This is what Bass Communion is: Steven Wilson makes a Bass Communion album for every recording he makes. Bass Communion is essentially the spirit of what makes Steven Wilson's music his. His songs aren't just guitar riffs + vox + rhythm parts. It's the ambiance, the sonic backdrop that works in addition to the guitars, vocals and rhythm that gives the work of Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree such breadth and richness.

He draws much of that from Richard Barbieri who plays keys for Porcupine Tree and is a living legend when it comes to sonic ambiance.

In short, Bass Communion is exactly what Steven Wilson claims it to be. It's the soul of his music. People might not appreciate it because it might be the soul but without the bones or the skin or the blood you don't have the rest of the song there you provide content and reference. I guess what I'm trying to say, if you've ever had a mood or a feeling but no specific event or condition to attribute it to, you can perhaps call it Bass Communion. It's the pure mood without the events that take place in a typical song to tell you why you feel that way. In the musical world of Steven Wilson, Bass Communion is just the synth backdrop "mood" sections playing a solo album. There's not much going on other than sounds and chord structures that provide a certain feeling to the listener. I'm not usually this artsy but in this case I know that this is exactly what Steven Wilson wants to provide with this music; a mood and ambiance without structure or rhythm. Music without music or Music without any distractions of the end goal which is a mood or feeling.

Just something different to experience, it's a good lesson in how Steven Wilson creates music and perhaps how you can use ambiance to enhance every work if done right.

For the mature, intellectual listener/engineer and or composer only! Absolutely Not kids stuff. Haunting to perfection. The production on this recording is without equal! An Artistic Masterpiece!
